Distorted sub picture after sup-sub conversion

Hello all.

I used to transcode DVD for a long time.
I'm really used to subrip for subtitle conversion/OCR to srt.
It has worked for a long time. I'm familiar with it.

Now starting with BluRay, I have done a sup-sub/idx conversion with BDSup2sub v4.0 in order to OCR the usual way.
But no matter how I mess around with the settings in BDSup2sub the subtitle picture in Subrip is distorted. The background colour ist greenish and subrip as well as my own eyes can barely recognize any coherent letters.

I found it a good idea to downsize the picture (via BDSup2sub) to PAL size. I even tried to stretch the picture by applying free scaling on top of that.

No idea what went wrong.
Maybe YOU have?!

Don't mistake me: suprip would be an option, of course. But the handling of styles like italic or bold does not appeal to me there...

If you aim for SRT anyway just use Suprip.

Sure. That's managable.

I prefer SubRip for several reasons:
I'm used to it :) It's able to set italic or bold letter codes in the middle of a sentence/ for a single word/character - SupRip does only set the style code for an entire line :( it has a keyboard shortcut for toggling italic or bold the postprocessing is richer: delete spaces between numbers, correct the capital "I" error, Time correction, etc.


This way I have to feed the resulting srt to Subrips postprocessing anyway...

Well, found the shortcut in Suprip (via ALT), but then I have to click into the entry field again...

I cannot believe that I'm the only one to run into a problem like this. There must be some who do srt via sub/idx conversion...

So in Suprip or Subtitle Creator they look exactly as bad?

Well, I didn't try it with Subtitle Creator. But I opened the files with Subtile Edit (http://www.nikse.dk/SubtitleEdit), which is BTW a mighty programme: They looked alright, the sub/idx as well as the original sup files.

It's strange: SubRip is by far the elder app that deals with vobsub files (OCR wise), but it seems to handle them differently. May I say incorrect? Or do newer apps use a different format syntax?


OT: The postprocessing capabilities are excellent in Subtitle Edit and the most advanced I've seen so far. Funny thing is, that is misses some OCR errors though, but using SubRip afterwards is cleaning all up! :p

Someone pointed out the solution to this in another thread: simply uncheck "Use IDX's file offset" under global options.
