Alternative to Subrip

Does anyone know if there is an ALTERNATIVE to subrip. It seems i cannot find even one alternative to rip subtitles from a DVD to an .srt file. Im not saying subrip will not do the job, but there are many time consuming errors and the interface seems quite outdated as well. I have searched and found nothing, but im hoping the kind people here could offer some suggestions.
