View Full Version : Identifying multiple embedded subtitles in MKV

I ripped Avatar BD to MKV/x264/AC3 and embedded 2 subtitle streams in a single idx/sub:

1. English (Na'vi)
2. English (hearing-impaired)

If I don't embed the subs but include them as idx/rar, in Zoom Player when I look at subtitle language, I see the two names as above (reported by DirectVobSub) as I have included these names as their "alt:" descriptions in the idx.

But if I embed the subs (using the same idx) I just see just "English" and "English" (reported by Haali, I think)

Is there any way to embed multiple subtitle streams in MKV and see different names if so assigned?

With mkvmerge (use mmg as GUI for ease of use) you can give tracks names in addition to the language. Haali's splitter should display this.

Thanks, it does.

One other point: With embedded subs in MKV, when I Hide or Show subtitles (as I often do when actors mumble their lines or I want to repeat a section), I notice there is a distinct pause or jerk in the video. This does not occur when the subs are in external idx/rar format and subs are enabled or disabled.

Does anyone else experience this?

Which tool did you use for ripping? I used both MakeMKV and DVDFab and in both cases the forced subs (Navi) were messed up. With MakeMKV the items would stay on until the next item was displayed and with DVDFab I only got the complete sub no matter if "forced only" was checked or not.
