View Full Version : Unable to display .srt with .avi file

I ripped episodes of the TV series, LOST and 24, to avi format so that I can view them on my Netbook. When I played the avi’s with .srt subtitles (they were named the same except the suffix), the subtitles were not displayed with some episodes but they are ok with some others. The results are very random. Did I do anything wrong? Is there any settings need to be twigged? I used the following software to rip the video:
- SubRip 1.20b17 to extract subtitles to .srt (which I preferred over .idx and .sub)
- FairUse Wizard 2.10a, DVDFab 7.0.1.2, and AutoGK 2.55 to create the avi files
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Why don't you try a format your netbook understands?
Going away from industry established standards would inevitably cause problems, I explained this long time ago. MPEG-2 codecs are standard on every computer (even under linux, one should select Multiverse) and storage space is no longer a problem, at least not the problem it was years ago. Rip to IFO/VOB and live happy :), it avoids spending times on reencoding to divx/xvid/h.264 and to srt, but it needs some extra space.

Hi! (they were named the same except the suffix), the subtitles were not displayed with some episodes but they are ok with some others. The results are very random.Doesn't sound logical.
Carefully re-check spelling of ALL filenames...

Thank you both Ghitslescu and Setarip_old for your replies!
Ghitslescu,
Storage is not my problem. It's the technical challenge that I try to understand and overcome.
Setarip_old,
Yes, it didn't sound logical; but it happened. Subtitles (.srt) were displayed just fine when I played the first episode but not with the second episode, and so on. About 6 of 24 episodes play with subtitles. Didn't know why

Again, have you carefully re-checked spelling of ALL filenames?

Maybe the player has problems, I noticed that Mplayer has some issues with unicode file names, while VLC has not, and some names are readable by Mplayer but not by VLC. Other players might behave differently. It suffices a single unicode char in the name (that might look like a space but it's not). A snapshot of explorer might help us....
Concerning the VOB/IFO issue, I gave you the best advice (it's how I do it myself), it spares me the encoding, codec and player issues. Not to mention that some of my languages use unicode only (lucky you, you're ami, no problems with diacritics) so SRT is not the format of my choice.

Hello! In vlc player go to file > open file > then open the avi file then click subtitles option then click settings then select the srt file then click ok and ok again.
