Subtitles not showing on a retail DVD with MPC-HC

Hi, I was ripping the subtitles for the movie Blow Out with VSRip and ended up with subtitles not showing up on playback. So I took my original DVD, enabled the subtitles but they also don't show up!! I watched this DVD on my DVD player and I know the subs are showing up fine but why MPC-HC is having troubles with those? Is there something I can do?

Are you using a renderer that supports subtitles? Are you using an external MPEG-2 decoder with DXVA mode enabled that happens not to play well with MPC-HC (e.g., do you see menu button highlights)?

err I'm not sure what you're talking about but I tried another DVD (Barton Fink) and its subs show up fine in MPC-HC. I'm using MPC internal subtitles renderer. MPC-HC has all internal filters turned on. Let me know if you need more infos.

Are the subs on the original DVD closed captions muxed into the video stream rather than DVD-SUP, or vice versa?

I got same problem. I made a custom DVD with subs.

I load final .IFO into MPCHC and it doesn't show subs.

I used DVDLabPro 2. I set them up as "show by default" and tried to move them on screen at diferent positions. I never got any subs on MPC-HC.

I loaded .IFO in VLC and they worked as it should.

PS: Anyways, I've got strange behavoiurs in DVD menus with MPC-HC since earlier versions (and I still have problems). VLC treats DVD menus and buttons correctly.

Text in this place in MediaInfo refers to Subtitles Streams (pictures like VobSub/PGS or Text like SRT/SSA). Yes, it's not accurate but change this might break API.

^ "Normal" DVD-capable MPEG-2 decoders, and MS's DVD Navigator too, have pins dedicated to handling subpictures, and AFAIK these do not offer the mediatype "text".

Well, this was actually ffdshow that was already decoding the picture by default. What I don't understand is why specifically those subs are not showing in MPC-HC whereas other subs from other movies are? When I right click on MPC , "subtitles" is greyed out. Those subs are also not showing up when I selected them in the DVD menu and then play the movie like on a regular home DVD player.

I don't know. :o Maybe some "insignificant details" during the authoring,
OR during the muxing process, are triggering a *bug* in ffdshow, in MPC-HC, OR in both. :(

Try disabling ffdshow's MPEG-2 decoder, so it won't be used for DVD playback. Use MPC-HC's internal decoder instead, OR the freeware DScaler 5. Also, and just for curiosity, try opening your DVDs in Windows Media Player... :devil:

Sorry for the confusion, the subs do show up on my standalone player (Panasonic RV40EG or something) but don't show up when I insert the DVD in the DVD Rom (Pioneer DVR-215D) of my computer and watch the movie with MPC-HC.

Well, MPC(-HC) may have internal conflicts, and surely there may also exist conflicts with other installed applications, running processes, DirectShow filters, etc etc etc.

You mean, disable it "inside" MPC-HC?
By default, ffdshow sets an ultra-high merit for itself,
and making MPC-HC "prefer" ffdshow's Video Decoder is pointless
(and depending on the "buggyness" level,
to tell MPC-HC to block ffdshow may have no effect).

BTW, have you ever tried DScaler 5?

And no, I keep having no idea why your current settings for MPC-HC and ffdshow work fine for some DVDs but do not work well for other DVDs. It's indeed more practical and more effective just switch to a different MPEG-2 decoder, or to a different version of the same media player.

I tried my DVD with VLC on another computer and the subs are displayed correctly.

When I said I disabled ffdshow, I meant that I removed it as a plugin within MPC-HC. So yes, inside MPC.
I also tried the ffdshow subtitle plugin and they also don't display the subs on my computer.

I don't think it's video related as the subs don't show on the original DVD (MPG2) and on my back up file (x264).
I really have no clue here.

If it plays properly using VLC on the same system, then you'll know that the problem is with MPC-HC on your system - and if it doesn't, you'll know that the problem is with your system ...
