Yeah, I understood all that, but the question still stands: 6 svqs <-> 9 versions?!?

And I have a new one: if these are disc specific svqs does it mean that current version of bd+ protection is undefeated, yet? This applies to all (3?) programs; none of them said "through any disc in, i'll handle it", they've all said "through any avatar"...

1) I can only attest to the fact that MakeMKV handled "Tooth Fairy" without any difficulty. "Tooth Fairy" was released on May 04, 2010 by 20th Century Fox and DOES contain some version of BD+.

2) As I suggested in an earlier post to this thread, I believe the days of identifying the BD+ protection applied as a specific iteration are gone: I believe that what we are seeing with this release is the beginning of an extremely difficult phase for the codebreakers at DVDFab, MakeMKV, and AnyDVDHD.

If, in fact, Rovi (formerly Macrovision) is able to readily create an essentially unlimited number (up to the point that it is, perhaps, not economically feasible to have so many different pressings) of variations and/or permutations of BD+ for a single new BluRay release, manual hacking of them in a timely manner will become infeasible.

Look at the dates at the files on the disc, it was made in February and Avatar in March.

I apologize if this question takes us too far off topic as this is about whether Avatar is using a new BD+ protection (um, yes :D) but Elektra was just released this week and I've not seen anyone even mention it yet. Just curious if it's using a similar variation on this BD+ theme. I realize it may not be the....um....."most popular" movie of the year. :)

Good point. A friend of mine has an LG BD390 with an update from 23rd April 2010 (!) and could not play Avatar. Luckily the disc is bought, not rented, but anyway it was a very unpleasant situation.

One advantages rentals do have is that they usually only available several months (6 here in NZ IIRC) after the original release of the Bluray so presuming they use the same disc (I would guess they usually do) updates for the player should hopefully be available. Of course the person renting may still lack the update...

They did not in the case of Avatar. The rental discs were not only different, they were also defective and had to be replaced. I would think rental users would be in worse shape, unless as you say you don't rent it for 6 months, because there's no recourse...you're essentially paying for a rental you can't use. That would suck IMO.

Actually thinking more carefully I think I was mistaken. I believe it's PPV that's normally held for 6 months from the DVD/Bluray release not rentals. It seems however that recently in the US Netflix aren't getting many DVD/Blurays for 4 weeks from the release date http://comicsworthreading.com/2010/04/09/rental-calendars-have-different-release-dates/

BTW in NZ if the Blurays were so clearly defective that they had to withdraw and replace the Blurays, even if they were rentals you would probably be legally entitled to a refund of the rental fee. I don't know how easy it would be to convince them to do so though. And of course it's probably not something they'd tell you automatically so unless you happened to hear of it you'd probably still be out of pocket. I think if the disc doesn't work with your player they'd normally offer you a replacement if you took it back the same day and mentioned the problem but I don't really know, I don't rent things I just seem to recall hearing people do it before.

And in the case of netflix, yes, some movies are now 30 days delayed, but, we also pay a monthly subscription so getting a replacement disc doesn't really cost us any money. Just time.

I'll admit I really haven't had time to keep up on things but Redbox and Warner Brothers duked things out and Redbox conceded. For WB releases Redbox will not distribute a release until 28 days after the street date. I'm unsure if other studios are involved but I know that not all are.

Sorry for bumping this old thread. Just wanted to say thanks for the heads up for clearing out the [informal] version numbering of bd+. I was referring to it as bd+ 5 based on the quote from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BD%2B#Reverse_engineering_and_emulation_of_BD.2B_implementations "On February 13, 2009 a 4th version of BD+ security code was discovered on the movie Australia" which made me assume that the latest version prior to Avatar was 4. Based on the list you linked to, by fengtao, I would guess Slumdog Millionaire actually carried the first copy of the version that wikipedia call version 4, not Australia. And what he calls version 6 and 7, although seemingly minor changes, I didn't know about them.
