I am trying to find out what is and what isn't possible with hd movies and subtitles. I found several posts here, but they cover a long range of dates, and combined with my own testing experience I still haven't figured it all out. I am using the latest stable xbmc version (which is from may 2009 xbmc 9.04.1 r20654), on Ubuntu. I also read that vdpau has something to do with this in regards to overlay. I prefer to use subtitles that come with a movie, and convert as they usually match perfectly - which saves a lot of time trying alternative subs
What I think I found out so far is this:
bluray iso/avchd iso XBMC doesnt play these
workaround: extract the m2ts file. use srt subitles. Is there any way to use the subs that came from the bluray iso?
MKV with srt subs included won't work. something to do with how xbmc handles subs. workaround: use mkvextract to extract the srt subs, they then work fine
MKV with ass subs included doesnt work
when extracted like above for srt they still dont work. I found some alternative srt subs online, or could look for an ass-srt converter. still curious why it won't work though.
Is this about correct? any hints on easy workarounds?
