FFCoder v0.97 BETA

The next version will have some changes in the preset file format. So any global presets created with previous versions will not work correctly with this version. Codec presets will not be affected. Only those presets will be affected which were created from the Main window. Please wait for the first STABLE/FINAL release before creating a lot of presets. Sorry for the inconvenience.

The next version will have an "Automatic mode" for encoding files. In this mode you won't have to select an encoder. The program will automatically decide which encoder to use for encoding audio and video. For example if you select MKV + H264 + AAC then x264 will be used for encoding video, Nero AAC will be used for encoding audio, and muxing will be done with MKVMerge.

Ah, I were looking in the x264 folder for presets, not libx264. An idea could be to be to press an "update" button in the program and make it update presets & ffmpeg/x264 etc. executables, like in MeGUI. Right now I can`t think of any other improvements... The program already has a lot of possibilities. Very good that you have implemented batch encoding, I don`t understand why some programs doesn`t have that

Has anyone had issues with audio sync. I'm using the mencoder option with XVID AVI and AC3 5.1 channel. I'm using this for XBOX 360 which only support the following. It seems that mp3 and 2 channel work fine but when try to go use AC3 it causes all sorts of issues.

File extensions: .avi, .divx
Containers: AVI
Video profiles: MPEG-4 Part 2 (Simple Profile and Advanced Simple Profile)
Audio profiles: Dolby® Digital (2 channel and 5.1 channel), MP3

There is a new item named Automatic in the Encoders menu. If you select this mode then FFCoder will automatically decide which encoder(s) to use. The audio and video will be encoded separately to temporary files, and the temporary files will be muxed into the output file.

Example 1: User selects MKV + AAC + H264
Result: Audio will be encoded using Nero AAC (Step-1), video will be encoded using x264_cli (Step-2) and muxing will be done using MKVMerge(Step-3).

Example 2: User selects OGG + Vorbis + Theora
Result: Everything will be done in a single step using ffmpeg2theora

Example 3: User selects FLV + MP3 + VP7
Result: Audio will be encoded using LAME encoder (Step-1), video will be encoded using avs2avi (Step-2) and muxing will be done using FFmpeg (Step-3).

@ho0k3r2

Did you try encoding with FFmpeg?

I'll give you rundown of the things I tried. I was first using Windows 7 and thought that might be an issue so I moved to a Vista machine that was just a basic install with no codecs or anything else installed except FFcoder.

The file I am using is an MKV:

Format : Matroska
File size : 51.2 MiB
Duration : 52s 594ms
Overall bit rate : 8 174 Kbps
Encoded date : UTC 2009-09-30 01:25:17
Writing application : mkvmerge v2.2.0 ('Turn It On Again') built on Mar 4 2008 12:58:26
Writing library : libebml v0.7.7 + libmatroska v0.8.1

Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Resolution : 24 bits
Video delay : 19ms
Stream size : 9.47 MiB (18%)

What I tried:

Test 1:
AVI XVID AC-3 6ch using ffmpeg
Result: Video looks fine but I get no Audio

Test 2:
AVI XVID AC-3 2ch using ffmpeg
Result: Video looks fine but I get Audio is delayed abour 1 second.

Test 3:
AVI XVID AC3 2ch using Mencoder
Result: Video looks fine but I get Audio is delayed abour 1 second.

Test 4:
AVI XVID AC3 6ch using Mencoder
Result: Video looks fine but I get Audio is delayed abour 1 second.

Test 5:
AVI XVID MP3 2ch using Mencoder
Result: Video and Audio both work fine.

I have tried other video files with the same result. This program works awesome it's just these couple issues and they seem to be an issue no matter which GUI I use so I don't think it is your program but more like something to do with FFMPEG and MENCODER.

I haven't found anyone else talking about this issue so I'm not sure what to think. Maybe no one else is using 6ch AC3 as an option. If there is no fix then I understand and will just switch to 2ch I just really wanted to keep the 6ch for future use on the 360.

Thanks for your help and again GREAT PROGRAM!

One other thing to note is when using AC3 with either MENCODER or FFMPEG it causes Windows Media Player and the Xbox 360 to play the video incorrectly. It looks like it speeds it up or something. Again the MP3 version works flawlessly on whatever I try.

@ho0k3r2

AC3 encoding is known to be problematic with FFmpeg and MEncoder. Try encoding with Avidemux also. If that fails then try some video converter that's not based on ffmpeg/mencoder. If the audio is delayed by 1 sec throughout the duration of the video, then you can easily fix it by setting an audio delay of -1 sec. If the audio delay occurs suddenly at some point or if the audio-video goes out of sync gradually then it will be more difficult to fix.

Your tool is now my main x264 GUI !

Thanks for the great efforts ! I'm looking forward for your next releases ;)

Edit : Resizing filter is not working ..
Edit 2 : Framerate is always 25 fps if I use Resizing filter ?

Nice improvements in this new version! Another improvement I just thought of is to be able to just copy video and/or audio (just changing container for instance). Also, I got an error while trying to encode (from lagarith) with x264:

The video filters are not working when selected video codec is x264. Thanks for reporting the problem. I'll fix it.

If you select "FFmpeg" from the Encoder menu, then you will get options for copying the audio and video tracks without re-encoding. In Automatic mode the "Copy" options are not yet available. I'll add these options in next beta.

I got an error while trying to encode (from lagarith) with x264:

It is difficult to find the problem. The error occurs for a particular Lagarith file, or does it occur for other files also?

I think I found the reason for several similar problems in ffcoder:

When using x264 with Mencoder I get the following error:
Option x264encopts: Bad argument ip_factor=1,4
Option x264encopts: Bad argument pb_factor=1,3
Option x264encopts: Bad argument aq_strength=1,0

I got a similar error when trying to load a x264 preset:
System.InvalidCastException: Conversion from string "0.9" to type 'Decimal' is not valid.
at Microsoft.VisualBasic.CompilerServices.Conversions.ToDecimal(String Value, NumberFormatInfo NumberFormat)
at Microsoft.VisualBasic.CompilerServices.Conversions.ToDecimal(String Value)
at FFCoder.frmLibx264.LoadPreset_XMLElement_MeGUI(XmlElement root)

I also got a similar error when trying to set the duration of a clip.

My system was set with Norwegian regional settings (which means that the decimal separator is ","). After changing to English (united states) (where decimal separator is "."), all of these problems dissapeared. Maybe you need to override this setting in ffcoder so that "." is always used as separator. I was then able to convert with mencoder x264, but ffmpeg x264 & x264 both still crashed when trying to encode, giving me the same error message as I posted recently. This happens for other types of video files also (xvid), not only lagarith.

Other ideas: Possibility to use codecs installed on the system (like in virtualdub). It is not that I think ffcoder is lacking codecs, it`s just an idea to get an even more flexible encoder. The only codecs I can think of right now that I`m "missing" are maybe lagarith & windows media.
I normally don`t like windows media format, but if I`m sending videos to people who don`t know much about video they most likely don`t have the required codecs installed, and can most likely only play windows media video.

You are right! The problem was with the localization settings! Thank you very much :) The comma problem was driving me crazy. Download the update. It should fix the problem.

You can encode with Lagarith using FFCoder!!!!

Select Automatic from the Encoder menu. Set the video option to VFW Codec. Click Configure. A small window will open. Select the lagarith codec (or any other codec installed on your system) and click OK.

WMA/WMV files can also be created with FFCoder. The only problem is that the files will be in Windows Media 8 format (Windows Media 9 gives better quality)

FFCoder v0.98 Beta

[added] Audio and Video streams can now be copied without re-encoding in Automatic mode
[fixed] Localization problems: Encoding would fail if the user's system used regional settings in which comma is used as decimal separator
[fixed] Frame rate and frame size options not working for x264 codec
[fixed] Progress % in progress window was not accurate if only a part of the input file was selected for encoding
[updated] MediaInfo to v0.7.25

Ops, didn`t know about the vfw option! Great that you also have implemented that. I was not able to use it by the way, as nothing happens when I press the "configure" button to select vfw codec... No small window is opened. I have now tried ffcoder on another computer I have, and I have the same problem with x264 there also. Also, the "crop video" window always hangs for me immediately and is never able to display the video.
Even more ideas:
-"stay on top" option for GUI (useful for drag n`drop files)
-use/show/specify frame number when setting duration in addition to time (maybe also use frames in "extract images")

Nice application. I'm just making my first tests with it but I've noticed some things:
With version 0.98 you still need to replace mediainfo.ddl with the x64 version if you are in 64-bit Windows.

1.- Every time FFCoder is started it creates C:\Converted folder even if you used other output folder and stored it on the config file.
2.- You can't remove files from the list using right-click because there isn't an entry for that en the context menu.
3.- If you use the profile for Xbox 360 you can't select Nero AAC Encoder as the audio encoder. Only gives you FACC.
4.- An option to use the system TEMP folder could be added.
5.- Everytime I tried to change container of MKV to MP4 for Xbox 360 (copy video and using Nero for audio) all the files failed with errors like this: [NULL @ 0x300f7b0]error, non monotone timestamps 6000 >= 3984

It also would be great to have batch jobs with different settings. I know that this is early Beta stages, tough...

Great encoder app you have done. Hopefully, it only will be getting better.

Are you able to play videos using MPlayer on your PC? Drag a video file and drop it on mplayer.exe (in bin/mplayer folder). check if the video plays.

Even more ideas:
-"stay on top" option for GUI (useful for drag n`drop files)
-use/show/specify frame number when setting duration in addition to time (maybe also use frames in "extract images")

Stay on top option can be added. It is not possible to display frame number when setting duration since mplayer's seeking capability is not very good. It can seek only to the nearest keyframe.

In "extract images" also frames cannot be used. FFmpeg's seek is not accurate enough.

I am trying to detect if the OS is 64-bit on startup but the code is not working correctly. I'll find a way to fix this problem (maybe show a dialog on startup and ask the user if the OS is 64-bit)

1.- Every time FFCoder is started it creates C:\Converted folder even if you used other output folder and stored it on the config file.

I'll fix it.

2.- You can't remove files from the list using right-click because there isn't an entry for that en the context menu.

if you don't want to encode a file then simply uncheck it. There is not much use of removing individual files from the list so the option was not added.

3.- If you use the profile for Xbox 360 you can't select Nero AAC Encoder as the audio encoder. Only gives you FACC.

After loading the profile, select Automatic from the Encoder menu. Nero AAC will then be available. However this is not recommended since the file produced may not be playable on the device. Use it at your own risk.

4.- An option to use the system TEMP folder could be added.

All temp files are saved in <OutputFolder>/Temp and deleted after encoding. Some users may find these files useful. Using the system TEMP folder is risky since the data may get deleted even if the user wants to keep the files.

5.- Everytime I tried to change container of MKV to MP4 for Xbox 360 (copy video and using Nero for audio) all the files failed with errors like this: [NULL @ 0x300f7b0]error, non monotone timestamps 6000 >= 3984

Copying the audio/video track without re-encoding is problematic (see the Help file for known issues)

It also would be great to have batch jobs with different settings. I know that this is early Beta stages, tough...

I don't have any plans to implement this. I find these type of GUIs to be very confusing.

Great encoder app you have done. Hopefully, it only will be getting better.

Thank you. I don't have any more plans for this program. I have moved on to other projects and they are taking up most of my time. The upcoming FFCoder v1.0 will be declared stable (even though many problems are yet to be fixed). All future releases will be mostly for fixing bugs, updating encoders, and adapting to changes in the command line.

Yes, there are licensing issues. It's the same reason why Nero's AAC encoder is not included in MeGUI either.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Quick Bug Report:

When using the Ipod 5.5 Gen profile on a directory of videos, the resulting videos are not compatible with an iPod. I found out the hard way after converting a bunch of videos for a train ride and then not checking them before I got on the train. Oops. Won't make that mistake again.

New idea: drop a set of images in ffcoder and make a movie of them. Avisynth can do this easily with ImageSource. The images should preferably be sorted with natural sorting... Several "makemovieofimages" programs sort a set of serialized images so that you will get 1,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,2,20 etc...

This program was not tested on Win7 x64. I'll try to find the problem.

All those presets were imported from XMediaRecode (http://www.freewarefiles.com/XMedia-Recode_program_47942.html), so there is no guarantee that they will work. Most of the presets should work. Some may give problems. If you find any more presets which don't work please inform me so that I can remove them.

can you add a batch trim feature like the batch video file joiner. Preferably with an option to use the same trim settings for all the files in the batch. I want to remove credits from lot of files
right now i have to individually trim all my movies one by one.
Thank you

Okay, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the info.

Would be cool to be able to specify avisynth commands in the gui, something like what you have implemented now with the "filters" menu

I will be adding avisynth filters in the next version. It will look like this:

http://teejee2008.wordpress.com/files/2010/01/ffcoder_099_vf.jpg

Each item in the list is an Avisynth script that can be edited, by right-clicking on it.

I'm also changing the layout of the main window to make it more compact.

Will it also be possible to specify custom avisynth commands? Say one wants to use a plugin not found in your list? You could make one filter named "custom" which one can edit to be whatever needed

In v0.98.0.0, the slider for quality in the Theora Encoding box is doing the opposite of the description. Drag to the left for better quality and you will get smaller file.

Nice program, looking forward to future versions :)

a few more comments...
-ffcoder uses a relatively long time analyzing avisynth files when they are added (maybe not much to do about that)
-presets not up to date with newest x264 versions. For instance i get "x264 [error]: invalid argument b-pyramid = --partitions". New versions of x264 demand a value for b-pyramid. Maybe some other stuff has changed also
-maybe sort input files by name or size or date in the gui? Their order seem quite random now

FFCoder 0.99 Beta

This is my first attempt at adding Avisynth options to FFCoder. This version is likely to contain a lot of bugs. Please report all problems in this thread as soon as you find them. If you are having too many problems then either use a previous version or turn off the Avisynth option in the options window. It will take a few more versions before most of the bugs can be found and fixed.

Download FFCoder 0.99 Beta (24 MB) (http://www.mediafire.com/?lmokrhiijtj)

Changelog:

[fixed] Problems with matrix editor and font settings
[fixed] Slider labels in Theora's codec config window were wrongly placed
[fixed] Encoding fails with x264's b-pyramid option due to changes in x264's CLI
[fixed] FFmpeg encoding fails with files containing an audio track before the video track
[fixed] Getting the correct stream order from MedaInfo

[added] Thumbnail preview for video files
[added] Options for processing audio and video using Avisynth before encoding
[added] New option in preferences window for enabling/disabling all avisynth options
[added] New option in preferences window for selecting the source filters to use for opening audio/video files in Avisynth
[added] Right-click option to preview the Avisynth script before encoding
[added] Wavi will be used for piping audio from AVS files to encoders like LAME, OggEnc, etc (instead of using ffmpeg). As a result, encoding the audio from AVS files will be much faster now (almost twice as fast) but progress info will not be available during encoding.
[added] Media Player Classic for playing AVS files

[changed] Support for mencoder's and ffmpeg2theora's video filters have been dropped. They won't be needed any longer since Avisynth's filters can be used with any encoder.
[changed] New layput for main window.
[changed] A large number of minor cosmetic changes

[updated] x264 to r1416
[updated] ffmpeg to r21566
[updated] MediaInfo to v0.7.25

@ivar

All items in the filter list are editable. simply right-click any item and click 'Edit'.

It will take some time to analyze avisynth files because FFmpeg has to be executed in the background to get the info. In this version analysis will be more slow since thumbnails have to be generated for video files.

Thanks for reporting the x264 issue. I have updated the GUI.

@heraldo

Thanks for pointing out that mistake. It would have gone unnoticed otherwise.
