Since you said PS3 media server will work with the XBox 360 as well I just might have to give that a try when I get to that point. Where does one obtain this server program?

I don't know if you are still following this, but I have gotten VC1 BD source to my server where they will play on my 360. It involves HDC and a couple of other pieces instead of BDRebuilder (which I tried, but like you was looking for a different solution).
I can also vouch for PS3 Media Server - it works (for the most part).
