I have the Nightmare Before Christmas DVD, and was able to rip the movie with Gordian Knot, no problem. However, when I used VobSub Configure to get the subtitles, nothing happened. I then opened the VobSub Ripper Wizard, loaded the .IFO, and got a message saying "ERROR: Cannot open VOB sequence." Up to this point, I was not able to rip and subtitles, let alone Chinese ones.

I then opened SubRip, and first tried converting subpictures to text with OCR. Using this method, although tedious, I was able to get English subtitles. But as you could imagine, it is difficult to do this with Chinese characters. In fact, it seems impossible. Even if I had the patience to type in thousands of characters, I still couldn't use this method, because SubRip divides characters into arbitrary parts, that can't even be typed. However, it's worth noting that I was able to VIEW the NBC's subtitles, showing that they were in fact ripped from the DVD. In Subrip, you can also convert subpictures to .bmp or .sup, but I couldn't find any software that converts these files to .ssa, .idx, .sub, or even .srt, which I would need to integrate the subtitles into the movie.

This has proven to be a huge headache, and any help with this would be much appreciated.

Have you tried to rip the sup files from DVD with PgcDemux?
If you can manipulate the sup file then it would be an easy task to convert it to idx+sub files with SubtitleCreator.

Personally I use SubtoSrt to convert DVD or idx+sub file into srt file.

Using DVD Decrypter, I ripped A Nightmare Before Christmas and 300, which gave me several .vob files, an .ifo, and a text document about PGC stream information. I tried using PgcDemux v1.2.0.5, but for both movies after putting in the .ifo and clicking "Process!," I got a message saying "Error opening input." This message appeared regardless of mode, as I tried it doing it by PGC, VOB id, and Single Cell.

Trasit, I couldn't find the software from that link. Could you post another site to download from? Also, if this software converts to .srt from .sub files, then that's a problem. All I get from ripping the DVD with DVD Decoder is an .ifo, and with SubRip I can get the subtitles as .sup or .bmp.

I know what you mean. You do not have a sub file now.
Please use a software named subtosrt.

It can use the bmp files created by subrip.

You need to use emule to download it.

The html link is here:

I think you know Chinese, you may find the emule link in this page.
