This has only happened recently, i encoded a few of my Blu-Rays and muxed them into mkvs with srt subtitles, but Media Player Classic or GOM Player play it fine till a subtitle is supposed to be displayed, if i right click in the windows it lags and takes forever to redraw and the subtitles dont show on the screen, if i untick subtitles everything returns to normal.

Even doesnt work if i use vobsub in avisynth to make a hardcoded encode it just lags and crashes when encoding.

Ive tried all the different rendering modes like VMR9 and EVR and 2 different players and i cant figure out what the problem is.

Has anyone encountered this before?

My first suspect is how you created the srt subtitles.
If you can play videos with other (soft) subtitles and even other srt subs, then the srts you created seem to bee corrupt.
Try remaking them (however you do) and remuxing them.
