Hello everybody,
My problem is to extract subtitles from VOB/IFO files in order to import them into DVDLabPro. Subrip seems to be the right tool to do this, doesn’t it?
Not so simple! DVDL is rather picky about colours of the imported subtitles if you want them correctly interpreted. If not the subtitles colours produced by DVDL are unpredictable. Most often, colours and transparencies are shuffled between the four pixel categories. AFAIK the correct specs for DVDL import are the following
Background : Black (or White)
Main : White (or Black)
Outline : Blue
Shadow (Antialias) : Red
Moreover the upper left pixel’s colour should be the colour of the background.
In addition the subtitles bmp files and their specs (time, location on the screen and location of the bmp files) should be in .SON, .SST or .SUB formats.
The problem is that I do not understand how SubRip works with these colours. With any of the 3 output formats, you seem to be able to specify a custom palette, but I could not find how to do it in such a way to get the desired result whatever the colours and palettes are (sometimes it works but more often it does not). Some people have published detailed workarounds which work in some cases but not in others.
More precisely I cannot answer the following questions
- What are the numbers of the 4 colours you can specify? It is written #1 to #4, but are they supposed to be the colours of the b, p, e1, e2, or the 4 first colours of the future palette?
- SubRip shows you the first subtitle and you can see the colours you will get. But sometimes these colours in the preview change when you change your palette and more often they do not change.
- The resulting colours in the output subtitles seem to be determined more by what SubRip decided than by what I entered in the “custom” palette.
- Why do the palette written in the text SST or SON files, the palette in the bmp themselves and the palette I specified are all different ones?
In short, is it possible to really specify custom colours in any of the 3 formats? If yes, how? If no, what is the strategy of SubRip (because if I know it I can adapt mine)?
I don’t know if these are easy or difficult questions for people who know SubRip better than I do. Maybe I missed some simple trick? Maybe there is a tutorial somewhere which deals with these issues?
