Cannot export .srt

I'm using the program subrip in an attempt to create a .srt for the video I just converted. I've followed two guides on the internet and always run into the same problem when I'm done. When I click "save as", it produces a button that says "Save" (surprise, surprise). When I click that button it takes me back to where I was before I clicked "save as." I have done several searches on my hard drive and have confirmed that a the file, "newfile.srt" was never made. I have tried this on two different machines and have never been successful in creating the file. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Have you selected an "Output format" and checked "Convert to"?

Yes I have. When you say "checked convert to", you mean the button that says "convert to this format" right? I'm trying to get this to work on my Archos 605 and the only formats that are supported are .srt, .ssa, .sub (text based), and .smi. The program wont let me save under any of these formats. I'm running windows XP SP2 (on both machines) if it matters.

And perhaps the most obvious (perhaps silly) question - Have you first used the program's OCR to convert the graphic subtitles, one letter at a time, to text?

Yes I have. However I came close once. I used Auto GK to convert the video, and chose external subtitles. I opened the .sub that was created. After every other line the background color and text color would change, and it would be hell completing it. It couldn't even recognize letter's I have identified. For the sake of this conversation let's call this hellish situation "mode b" and the good one that goes without a hitch "mode a". When I open the video directly (before the AutoGK conversion), I am constantly in mode a, the OCR repeatedly recognized the letters and nothing goes wrong, but I can't save. Then I open the .sub and at every other line, I enter mode b and it becomes hell in getting the right letters to be recognized. I didn't bother to finish and just used "best guess" all the way to the end. (I'm experimenting with a 3 minute segment of a dvd until I get the process down.) When I reach the end I'm able to save.

When someone figures out what I'm doing wrong and points it out, I have a felling that I am going to kick myself repeatedly. Sorry if I'm irritating anyone here.

Make your life simple. Load the DVD into DVDSubEdit, select "OCR" and then select "Save as .SRT".

The entire project will take about two minutes...

have to agree with tactical fart.

i used the latest version

- did the ocr
- tried to save as .srt
- tried to export as .ttxt

and it didn't work.

some p.ss farting around my trying to save/export in different orders and i managed to get both .srt and .ttxt files. but didn't work straight as it should.

also got a couple of duplicate subtitles repeated at the end time sports which had to be manually cleaned.

otherwise, it is great.

could import into nero recode but unfortunately if i imported via yamb nero showtime doesn't seem read them.
