Remove several parts from a subtitle?

Hi all, I have removed some scenes from one of my movie to make the movie appropriate for the kids to watch. So I used avidemux to remove the parts and I took down a note with the timings of the parts I removed but I am having a problem with the movie's subtitle, I couldn't find a tool to remove the parts of the subtitle based on the timings that I have so the movie will be insync with the subtitle, so I was wondering if there is actually a tool that cuts the video with the subtitle altogether to save me the trouble or maybe I should look for a tool to cut the subtitle separately. I tried SubAdjust and subtitle workshop but there was no use. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If this is just for casual viewing by the kids, try DVD Shrink's Reauthor mode. Use the timings of the parts you want removed, just drag the movie into the left pane, adjust the beginning and end to include only the parts between the bad scenes. Keep doing this for each section you want to keep. The subtitles will stay with each part, no problem!

Tip: On each 'keeper' section, right-click, choose "Select default streams...", select the subtitle stream so that it will display automatically for each scene, which becomes a separate title in the finished DVD structure.

Thank you Mary H, for your suggestion. DVD Shrink's idea is really clever, but I couldn't do this to the ripped file since DVD Shrink only accepts VOB files and not avi files, so is there a way to this to avi files as well?

Sorry, it wasn't clear to me that you were starting with an AVI file. I thought you had the original DVD to work from. :)

Hi!

It would likely be far easier to re-rip your original DVD and follow the suggestion made by "Mary H" to use DVD Shrink in "Re-author mode", as opposed to establishing what the format is of the subtitle file you created for playback with the .AVI you created from the DVD - and then determining how, if possible, to edit that subtitle file.

What software and procedures did you use to extract the subtitle file from your original DVD?

Thank you all for your help, @Mary H: well I can do that and I still have the Original DVD but the thing is its going to be really time consuming procedure to rerip all my movies, so I might end up doing that if all other solutions failed.

As far as obtaining a subtitle file via the Internet, I'll leave comments, if any, to the moderators...

It started with one movie but then I thought maybe if its an easy process I'll do the same with the rest of my movies so we can have something to watch every weekend or so.

Regarding ripping the subtitle off the DVD, I didn't try DVDSubEdit before, I was using subrip, and to be honest last time I did that was long ago so I can't really remember what procedure did I follow but I think I've used subrip, included with gordian knot and I was following the steps in the tutorial provided by doom9 from the guides section. The OCR engine wasn't smart enough to recognize a lot of letters so I had to teach it how to recognize many letters and after that I had to retrace the errors in the output subtitle and mistakes made by the OCR engine, it wasn't that much work but when you do these repetitive tasks for all your DVD collection.. well it seems like a lot of work.

And I don't think downloading the subtitle from the internet is much of a problem, because it is of no use without the movie and I own the movie, so I think I just saved my self sometime thats all, I would like to hear the moderators opinion about that.

DVDSubEdit's OCR function is totally AUTOMATIC. I strongly suggest you try using it...

I'll try it setarip_old, thanks for your suggestion, but I was curious if anyone can come up with a solution for cutting avi files along with the .sub or .srt subtitle, because as I said earlier reripping my DVDs would be the last resort for me, thanks again for all your help.

It depends upon the law of the country one lives in.
Personally, and I repeat, personally I think it's OK to translate the subs of a dvd into another language if one owns the dvd.
If one buys a dvd with english subs alone and there is already a translation to find (custom) into another language, then I think it's hard to judge the user who does it. As long as one owns the dvd and it's a legal copy I wouldn't consider this as a act of piracy.
On the other hand most countries legislation looks at "rips" of any kind as piracy.
For further clarification one should consult the laws of the country one lives in but download of subs is "per se" no crime.

Thanks ukendt for shedding some light upon this subject. I agree with you in every aspect, I just want to add that we as intellectual human beings have to be sensible while applying the rules and regulations, I found this principle to be very effective every time I use it.
