avi - audio and subtitle errors on standalone

I downloaded two Japanese movies and encountered the following problems.

movie 1:

I burnt out a disc and tried playing the show on a standalone. The video is fine; the English subtitles (.srt) display but there is no sound.

There was no problem getting the sound and English subtitles to work on the VLC.


movie 2:

On the standalone, the video is fine; the audio is fine; but the English subtitles (.srt) do not display. None of the accompanying subtitles display.

However, there was no problem getting the English subtitles to work on the VLC.


Wondering if anyone has any idea why the above problems occured and how to rectify them.
