All,

1. I sincerely hope I didn't offend anyone with my response in this thread. I was a little pi**ed when I came back online to find this thread at the top of the forum.

2. While I appreciate all donations (for obvious reasons), I don't want any of the early contributors to feel as if they need to send more. The reason the "charter" VIPs all got in for $10 was because they helped in the development -- meaning they were there pointing out improvements and fixes that would make it a better product. If anything I'd say I owe them.

3. I don't know if any of the 5 beta testers handed out the software, and I don't want to imply that. I loaded it on my server for them to download -- and it's always possible someone else managed to find it somehow.

4. I'm not planning to stop development, but I have to spend less time on it so I can make a living elsewhere. I've given up on any hope that this will ever become anything more than a "just for the hell of it" endeavor. My plans for an HD-DVD version will probably also be tabled.

I guess for the most part I'm just disappointed in humankind -- mainly because I know there are lots-and-lots of people using DVD Rebuilder, and if only a few donated every now and then, I wouldn't be backed into this embarrassing situation. When people run the rip-off copy and it loads up REG-RB.EXE, for some reason they have a tendency to push the "Get Key File" button. My server get continual hits hour-after-hour of "Invalid user attempt" messages in my logs (24 hours a day) using the same old recognizable rip-off names -- so I know they're out there.

You'd think with that many people using it (or at least loading it on their computer), I'd get a a random donation every now and then just because of the exposure. Believe me, that isn't anywhere near the case. While I never planned to get rich on DVD-RB, I was hoping I'd do better than minimum wage... which, very definitely, is not the case. I have no illusion of ever supporting myself through it.

Now, here's the real point I'm trying like to make: Contrary to the way they'd like to portray themselves -- the hacker community is the best thing that every happened to large software companies (who dictate prices and control what you can and can't do on your computer -- you know who I'm talking about). They do it by pushing any small mom-and-pop startup out of existence before they ever get the chance to break even. The "bigs" just keep pulling in your money hand-over-fist, and never have to worry about competition at reasonable prices.

I know -- it sounds like whining, and since it truly is, I'll stop here.

Just checked the DVD-RB main site, can anybody see the 'donate' button, or am I just not looking hard enoughMaybe you have some kind of ad blocker hiding this button? In any case, the Donate button on the right-hand side of http://www.jdobbs.com/ AFAICT gets you registered with a copy of Pro. Since I am ALREADY registered, I just logged-on to PayPal and clicked on SEND MONEY and entered DVD-RB@comcast.net (PayPal address for Jerry Dobbs). When you do this, you get a confirmation from PayPal that he is who we think he is! :)

I also put a note in the Comments area of my registered address so jdobbs would know I was already registered.

I'm just disappointed in humankind...As I always say, "People are just NO damn good!". Some days I mean it as a joke, too often however it is not...

I have a lot of shareware and freeware on my computer but actually only a handful of programs that I use religiously, and RB-Pro is one of them. It has always been enjoyable and useful, but recently I bought an upconverting player (the wonderful Toshiba HD-XA2 w/Reon-HQV processing chip) that does an outstanding job with SD-DVDs, but for Component-Out, which is what I use, the CP has to be stripped. So now, more than ever, because I have to strip CP anyway from my DVDs to enjoy upconversion, post-ripping I use RB-Pro and these discs look almost like HD. Yeah sometimes I skip RB-Pro and just burn to DL disc, but most movies can be re-encoded and look just fabulous.

Anyway, here's another reason to use for RB-Pro and maybe the need will get greater as more people get-into HD displays, and upconverting players.

Yeah, I've also just re-donated $30. Hope it helps somewhat!

I just donated another $25. I was an early adopter too. Keep up the good work JDobbs.

Having used it since version 0.14 I find it worth a lot more than what I have donated so far, so a new small donation from me also. :)

I find it worth a lot more than what I have donated so far...That's great! NobbyNobbs to jdobbs... I love it. If we could bump this thread about once a month, maybe our favorite shareware author will get himself an HD-DVD player, and...who knows?! ;)

Jdobbs,
Don't table HD-DVD support entirely!! It is one of several options that could bring back your donations in full and then some. You should finish a stable development with HD support, but keep it locked away for a small amount of time. Wait for HD burners to come down in price, and for HD burnable discs to become widely available.

Then come out guns blazing, saying that your program is the only one on the web with fully HD support!! People will flock to you by the thousands!!

And, it will give Hank315 time to finish adding support for high resolution mpeg2 encoding.

Honestly, I really think that tabling HD support permanently is a bad idea. It is maybe the strongest of several features that are sure to bring your donations/customers back.

If you need the hardware, wait 5-6 years until I graduate from college, and get a job, and I will personally buy you whatever drives/media you need for testing. Seriously, just bide your time until HD media becomes readily available and then explode onto the markets.

That offer for buying hardware is serious. For any developers that I recognize would truly benefit from the hardware, as soon as I have a stable source of income, I am your man for if you need a certain optical drive/ media/ processor.

Note: I won't be able to fulfill that promise for at least 5 years, but if you are still developing great programs (like Jdobbs is), then I will help to finance your application.

Edit: Oh, and you might want to update your website with the latest version, just letting you know.
