DVD subs to ssa for mkv file

I'm really embarrassed to be asking such a seemingly basic question, but I've been trying to do this for a while and haven't had any success.

To date I've been using VobSub (thru MeGUI) to extract subtitles from DVDs. However they don't look that great to me and after seeing a couple of anime fansubs that used .ssa subs (I'm using SMPlayer which has nice ssa sub rendering) I decided I wanted to try them out. However I haven't been able to find anything that works.

I tried Subtitle workshop but I couldn't get it to open the extracted .sub/.idx subtitle file.
I also tried using SubRip 1.30 Beta and using the guide I found on Doom9 through google I got it to generate a whole bunch of BMP files but didn't know where to go from there.

Any help/advice would be appreciated!

I also tried using SubRip 1.30 Beta and using the guide I found on Doom9 through google I got it to generate a whole bunch of BMP files but didn't know where to go from there.I don't have SubRip on this computer, so I can't check the particulars, but you don't tick the box for the BMPs, but one for OCR to text-based subs, and you choose the SSA format. This is after opening the IFO for the VOBs containing the subs you want. Doom9 has a guide here:

I guess this is the same one you saw, but you obviously didn't pay attention, because he's very clear about how to do it:
Make sure SubPictures to Text via OCR is selected in the Action area. This enables the image to text conversion.

I'm not exactly what guide I found (I googled it but it *was* on Doom9), but it wasn't that one. The one I followed told me to go the BMP route... so I did pay attention I was just reading the wrong thing. Anyhow that guide looks like it has what I need so thanks for the link.
