DVD Selectable Subtitles?

My sister had a video she wanted converted to DVD-Video and subtitled since the people were hard to hear. I created the subtitle file with Aegisub and used TMPEG DVD Author to author the DVD's menu but it doesn't give you the option to add subtitles.

Is there a way to keep the menus TMPEG created and add the subtitles it into the DVD so that you can turn the subtitles on/off when playing in the set-top player? I've already tried google'ing and I haven't found anything that will allow you to turn the subtitles on/off during playback... unless I've been using the wrong keywords.

it was on her camcorder but when i got it, it was in high quality xvid/mp3 (i assume her husband knew how to do that much but didn't know how to get it to dvd) which i then converted it to MPEG2 video.

i really like the menus created by TMPEG DVD Author so i wanted to keep them but add the ability to hit the subtitle button on the control and have the subtitles show up on the tv. if it was on the computer then i could simply put the subtitle file with the video but that's not the case.

You can convert the subtitles to ".SSA" format, load both the XviD video and the ".SSA" subtitles into VirtualDub - and save the video with PERMANENT subtitles.

You can then create the DVD, which will include the permanently displayed subtitles, using TMPGEnc DVD Author...

i didn't want it to be permanent, hence the question:

If you don't mind me asking, why WOULDN'T you want the subtitles to be permanent, if for your sister,"the people were hard to hear"?

(You would have the version that you've already created, WITHOUT subtitles and the one for your sister, WITH permanent subtitles)...

i could easily encode a dvd where it contains both encoded versions but i'm only looking to see *IF* anybody knows of a way to add the subtitles and have it be turned on/off from the remote; that was the ONLY question i asked.

You can use SubtitleCreator for that (Tools->DVD authoring wizard).
