HW limitations? on what hardware? ATI, nVidia, other(s)?
i doubt 2 completely different approaches have the exact same limitations in decoding...

Well if they are both trying to keep their products under some Standards, I guess they can. The question is... can we somehow trick the decoder to forcefully feed the hardware with our h.264 streams no matter their complexity?
I guess it's a bit hard at this point.
Does anyone know how come .. only cyberlink products have this ability? Do they have an exclusive license of some kind? It's a bit strange if you ask me.

ArcSoft supports DXVA 2.0 under Vista...
http://www.arcsoft-jungle.jp/products/tme/trial.php (it is a quite fast software decoder also, some nice competition for CoreAVC ;) )

It's possible - they may just have decided BD/HDDVD h264 standards were the only ones they needed to meet.
However, we do know old versions of the cl264 handle hardware acceleration better, so there's some room for optimism. The problem lies with cyberlink's motivation to fix things - given PowerDVD itself doesn't support mkv at all you have to wonder.

Ive done a little playback testing and noticed some interesting things...
CONSTANTS: XP Pro SP2, Forceware 163.75, MPC HC v1.0.11.0, Haali Matroska Splitter v1.7.359.22.
VARIABLES: CyberLink 264 Decoder Filter versions 1.99.0.1405 and 2.1.0.1108, and different output renders.
Video was a 1080p x264 mkv.
1.99.0.1405 w/ Overlay Mixer - video visable, high cpu usage and jitter.
1.99.0.1405 w/ VMR7 Windowed - video black but flickers, low cpu usage
1.99.0.1405 w/ VMR9 Windowed - video just black, low cpu usage
1.99.0.1405 w/ VMR7 Renderless - video visable, high cpu usage and jitter.
1.99.0.1405 w/ VMR9 Renderless - video just black, low cpu usage
2.1.0.1108 w/ Overlay Mixer - video visable, high cpu usage and jitter.
2.1.0.1108 w/ VMR7 Windowed - no frames drawn
2.1.0.1108 w/ VMR9 Windowed - video just black, low cpu usage
2.1.0.1108 w/ VMR7 Renderless - video visable, high cpu usage and jitter.
2.1.0.1108 w/ VMR9 Renderless - video just black, low cpu usage
Conclusion: Almost the same results between the two versions with 1080p playback. With Overlay and VMR7 video was visible but slow.
Next I will try the Nero decoder...
