I tried with the build you recommended, but wmv still not playable.
Also with this build, target size is off in Xvid. wanted 700mb, got 500mb.
Using 17a.

Also with this build, target size is off in Xvid. wanted 700mb, got 500mb.
It's normal.
Taken from the divx "why do I get undersized file" sticky (same applied to xvid though).
Once you get a file that is more than say 50MB under your target filesize, there's a very big chance the movie is 'maxed out'. This means that the codec has used every bit you gave it and has produced a file that is at the maximum quality, and therefor maximum filesize, and it just can't make it any bigger.
Sorry, I can't help you with your other problems though.

@dansus
i tested the OSS build of mencoder with your dvr-ms files and IS broken
while on standard mpeg is working...
btw i have done an update http://www.64k.it/andres/data/a/AutoMen17b.exe
added possibility to add audio to huffy export
compatible with recent mencoder build, for wmv and flv removed "-lavfopts i_certify_that_my_video_stream_does_not_use_b_frames" options

I gave 17b a go with mpeg, but the cmd box crashes instantly with OSS build.
With this (http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/mplayer/mplayer2007.08.19.7z) build, it encodes but isnt playable.
:(

i suppose to wait for a more stable mencoder build
...
btw i am seriusly thinking about an FFmpeg gui.. but there are a lots of options..
don't know is better to add only the "most inportant" or all... and how handle over 500 switch in a gui...

Yeah, FF drives me nuts with all the settings.
Sometimes you just want a simple way, so maybe a gui with only the most important options would be the way to go. You can always add more later.
If wmv is working for you, it must be a prob my end. I will try to pin it down and let you know.
Would it be possible to get a 60sec mpeg clip that worked for you?

Hi, Buzz!
Something doesn't work as it should when I use AutoMen. It breaks when I want to keep original size on capture I transcode from MPEG2 to AVC+AAC (MP4). It just write mp4.bat and stop.
It have worked to some degree before with autocrop 656, but then mp4create.exe doesn't work to re-mux into mp4 container. I took those part that I could use and put into YAMB instead and then let it create a new MP4 with both sound and video. That worked until now.
So I have two problem. Why doesn't mp4create.exe work as it should to demux and remux into container and why doesn't it work to keep original size work without any other action then to transcode work?
Bat file show every part for autocrop and re-size to be zero, so it must have to be something that doesn't respond well to keep those setting.

Hi Buzz',
with precedent build of mencoder; the cpu(Intel E6600) worked at 70 - 75 %; but with latest mencoder build (OSS build) the cpu worked as single core(50%).
In both cases, i've used AutoMen 1.7b
What happens?
Thanks for your job!!! and continuous development
buzzqw
19th September 2007, 07:26
autmen is just a gui that create and launch bat (make simplified...).
Is mencoder that do the hard work and use the cpu. I am sure that mp4 (x264) is multithreaded, but avi (xvid) not so much...
if you want more speed and cpu use i suggest to search and use a mencoder build optimized for speed and for your processor
the build of mencoder linked is not the fastest but the more stable :)

But i don't see a specific build for Core2Duo, but only for P4 or another site for Pentium-M
Where i find a specific buid for my configuration?
Thanks a lot

I think i have found a bug:
When i set the resolution to:"Original Size" and press start, all the settings are respected to the final movie, but if i want to convert multiple files(QueueIT -> Start all Jobs!)strangely all files converted have as resolution 656 width.
It's a bug o what?
Thanks for future interesting!

buzzqw: Like the program. Since I keep my files on a media center I don't really care about filesize. I would rather tell the software I want a fair/good/great/fantastic picture, set the width and let it run. Any way to do that?

actually not.. you must use both final size and video quality sliders
i can think 4 more quality tick that work on quantitizer ...
i will check :)

Hi Buzz,
With your latest mencoder build, my Core2Duo work at 50%.
I will use "old" relase of mencoder(dev-SVN r23833-4.2.0).
P.S.
For your test, use AMD X2 or Intel C2D?

thankyou very much for this tool, both automkv and megui crash after sometime encoding on my PC (XP64bit), I've narrowed it down to the fact that they cant seem to load mpegsource.dll
this tool works fine and produces much better results for me (as i use x264) than i get with xvid and the other tool that works fine autog. knot.

Well _THIS_ time I thought I wouldn’t be part of the silent majority ;-)
Anyway, the ONLY issue I had is after it finished I was left with the mp4 file (that wouldn’t play). An aac, and a .264 file. I muxed the .264 file and the aac file with mkvmerge (from mkvtoolbox) and the end result is a nice tasty mkv file that plays without issue. Result! :-)
I still had the avi file with the XVID codec encoded with autogknow and I compared it with this encode (produced with Automen). The Automen encode is noticeably sharper, thanks to the use of 264 I suspect at a bitrate of ~1500kbps (its a 6:45 capture from DVB).
Keep up the good work :-D

well that's strange since the mp4 should be the final muxed file..
are you sure you have the correct splitter installed ? (like haali media splitter .. or use vlc or nero showtime)
have you used the new presets or the size slider ?

I used the sliders, where are the presets?. the rar i downloaded had no docs :-(
Anyway tried to convert another file and 1st pass is OK but second pass fails.
Here is what happens When i edit mp4.bat and start from second pass.

Will get 1.9 (I'm on 1.8)... could you include an about page in the app, or perhaps put the verson in the titlescreen so we know what version we are on?.
As for a sample, i'll try and re-create the issue with a smaller file, if i'm able I'll upload it. current "big" file is 13 gigs :-)
edit: I see in 1.9 version is now in title bar :D
edit2: Just tried a 78MB portion from the start with 1.9 without issue. Now testing full file on fastest encoding.
Also would it be possible to have a seperate output dir for those of us who have more than 1 HDD and want to reduce amount of disk trashing?

plase try this build http://www.64k.it/andres/data/a/AutoMen20.exe
launch it and then close it
you will found a file named automen.ini open it in notepad and edit the path to mencoder.exe path, mplayer.exe path... and destination path
if NO path is specified then the exe are supposed to be in automen folder and the destination folder is the same as input folder

Thanks, downloaded and testing.
Btw on fastest encoding 1.9 has finished without crashing.
Testing the new version on "great" quality setting x264+AAC. will update tomorrow (~313mins per pass) afer the encode is done (13 gigs takes a while) :-)
edit:
Job started source file is on d:\temp I can see encoded file is being created on c:\temp (as i specified as output) :)

OK back from work and its finished.. will have to re-encode though :-(
Didnt realise that when you choose "great" from the Video quality, the final size slider is ignored. Its created me a 7GB+ file when I wanted 4GB :-)
I thought it (Video quality) was used in combination with final size to control number of passes etc. Still the important thing is the encode finished.
The other odd thing is the muxed mp4 file and the .avi file dont play in VLC with audio. Its not a problem at all as i use MKVMERGE and the output from mkvmerge plays fine (with audio).
On with the recode :-)

ADDED support for muxing with mkvmerge, if path is set automen will allow to mux in mkv

hrm, overnight encode crashed :-(
lucky, I can test new version. Encoding started again. Unfortunate that the process does not log to a file to help find why it crashed, still on with the encode(s) :)
edit:
Btw default path ("mkvmerge =" ) is not made in .ini file, I guessed it (and set it) and now mkvmerge button can be checked (it was ghosted).

Buzz,
I have always found this thing about size, quality and encoding speed to be a little difficult for beginners to understand. For size you want to use two pass and with a set quality you can use one pass; Encoding speed vs Quality has little impact on quality...etc.
Since the first thing you know is if you want to hit a particualr size I think a better interface would be something like this:
http://img155.imageshack.us/my.php?image=encodermi5.jpg
Love this program.
amirkhan
17th October 2007, 18:13
Ok last encode = PERFECT :-)
I think the reason its hard for (new) users with this program is because there is no context (read baloon) help in the app; or a help file. I'm not complaining has its free.
Thanks again for the app!

Hi!
I just found automen and i LOVE it, it does almost everything i want, do you think it would be possible to add the option to encode in VBR/ABR (-lameopts abr:br=128:ratio=50 or something similar) and maybe include the option to change priority to normal/high/whatever you want (-priority normal)?
Of course i could edit the .bat file automen creates to encode vbr audio and change priority(thats what i do now) but that does not make automen "auto" :/

is it possible to say use the source file and transcode to all available formats in AutoMen ?
Something like a multiple output of one source video or to implement a transcoding queue ?
