Subtitle position not correct under Linux

As you may know, subs can be displayed in different positions on the screen.
I need a player under Linux that can display subs in the right position as formatted.
I tried mplayer and VLC, but I can't get, for example, subs that show up in the upper part of the screen to show up in the upper part. Everything is displayed in the lower part!

which subs format did you use ? embedded in a container or not ?

you should try a recent mplayer svn build including libssa or asa support.

Or better, wait this summer coz there is a project to improve subtitles support/renderer in VLC via The Google's Summer of Code.
