MKV subtitles

Hey all,

Im in the process of backing up my DVD collection to x264 within MKV container, but i have encountered a problem with subtitles.

I can rip the subs from the DVD and make a seperate subtitle (.srt) text file with the same name as the MKV and it all plays as it should subs included.

But when i mux the subs with the MKV they do not play back. im using zoomplayer and can select the subtitles from the stream list but they do not show up?

if i drop the muxed MKV (audio + video + subs) into graphedit it does not render the subtitle pin, yet i have Vobsub installed.

any insight would be appreciated

Well, have you meddled with some settings in VobSub? You might've sc****d something up. Also, check for any... hmm... abnormalities in ffdshow...

i tried reinstalling vobsub but that did not help.
I do not use FFDshow for playback of x264, i use haali, coreAVC and AC3

As far as I know, you gotta have ffdshow to enable subtitles. It doesn't matter if your media player shows the subtitle stream... System (filter) settings come first...

i have FFDshow, i just dont use it for x264 playback. I thought vobsub would work independantly within the MKV container provided the splitter is working correctly?

Try using mkvmerge and add the video first then audio then only subtitles.

I had this problem when I add subtitles first then video and audio. Subtitles must be added last or it won't show up when I play the video.

I noticed that when i play mkv files containing embedded subtitles using MPC and Overlay mixing the subtitles do not appear.
They show if i use VRM9 Renderless.
Same with other players.

what you described simply indicates that your vsfilter is out of date. the fact that you call it "VOBSUB" only strengthen that theory. what version do you have? download the latest VSfilter from here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303
and install it with regsvr32 then try.

You shouldn't need vobsub for srt (text subs) to appear. Check in info. tool provided with the toolkit to be sure the sub stream is actually present, then play it back with vlc for testing purposes to see if the sub stream appears and you can render it.
