In order to encode DVDs, I do the following:
demux the audio+video w/DVD Decrypter; leave the subtitles as a VOB+IFO
convert the audio to Ogg using BeSweet/BeLight
convert the video to x264 using MeGUI
extract the subtitles from the VOB+IFO using VobSub (no OCR)
mux the audio, video, and subtitles (IDX+SUB) using MKVToolnix
Unfortunately, when I play back the original DVD in VLC, the subtitles appear slightly earlier than in the MKV file -- about 300ms earlier, to be precise.
Where does this delay come from? Is there a subtitle offset that I'm not aware of?
