Adding Subtitels to AVI´s

Hello, I don´t have any experience in adding Subtitels to avi´s so I´d like you to ask to share your knownledge with me.

I have 10 avi file files to which i have to add 10 .srt subtitel files, which I lateron would like to burn on a DVD. I want to have these 10 subtitel files included to the video file.

I´d like to know which programm I´ll need and which difficulties I could face during adding the subtitels ( I could think of unsync for example).

1) Use one of the many subtitle conversion programs to conver the .SRT file to .SSA format

2) Open the .AVI in VirtualDub - and set to "Full Processing Mode"

3) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Filters", choose the builtin "Subtitler" filter and select your .SSA file - and click on "Okay"

4) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose the same video codec and configuration that you use to originally create the .AVI

5) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as .AVI" and save with a new filename

I don't see the 'Subtitler' filter you mention in step 3. Do I need to get this filter separately?

Perform a Googlesearch for "VirtualDub filters", or "VirtualDub subtitler"...

There is a tool in Vobsub which appears to be capable of mux .srt to avi without encoding, but I've never succeed. Is there any possibility?

The DirectVobSub in Vobsub can automatically displays srt on the screen when an avi is played if the srt file has the same title as that of the avi file and placed in the same directory. But actually it does not "mux" the sub into the avi. When the avi is played, a green arrow will appear at the right bottom. Check that you have the correct file names.

E.g. if your avi is xxxx.avi then you need to have xxxx.srt or xxxx.eng.srt.
If your subs are in idx/sub then they need to be named as xxxx.idx and xxxx.sub.

Will mux srt into avi , replaying subtitles in AVI files requires VSFilter 2.27

It would be so much simpler to mux them into an mkv... huh

After all, he wants them to burn on a DVD as data for storage purposes and playback on a computer, right ? Because if you want to burn a DVD-Video or burn a data DVD but watch the dvd in a standalone DivX-player or something similar, this will not work.
