Make ON by default on VIDEO_TS?

Hi there,

anyone knows of an easy way to make a subtitle stream (say, the English ones) ON by default when to play in a DVD player? Can this be tinkered with in a finished VIDEO_TS folder?
I tried with PGCEdit but it didn't seem to work.

ps. I don't mean for the subs to be 'fixed' on the video stream, just for them to turn on without having to enter menus or press the subtitle button on the dvd remote.

I smiled when I read your post because, for several years, people have posted at many forums regarding just the opposite problem - "Why does the DVD I created with DVD Shrink automatically display subtitles when the original DVD doesn't?"

I'd suggest that you arrange to have a moderator re-post your question in the "IFO/VOB Editors" sub-forum here - and that you research the threads already posted there. I'm sure you'll discover, or be told, how to accomplish your purpose by using PGCEdit or IFOEdit...

Find the main stream in PGCEdit (eventually with trace).
Right click on it and establish which subpic You want to use(0,1 or 2 or whatever).
On the right windows(that belongs to the main stream), add a NOP command before any other command (but after the NOP commands You may find). Now, double click on it, chose alphabetical and SetSTN. Set the subpic You want on, save and close PGCEdit.
That's it: it should work most of the times(Some break commands may interfere though). Consult the ifo forum for further investigation.

I knew DVD Shrink could handle this but I remember reading somewhere in doom9 that Shrink could actually degrade picture quality, even when recompiling a dvd with no compression at all..?
Wonder if that's the case with Nero Recode as well?

Is that the "Normal start / forced start" option? Haven't tried it yet, and I thought forced subtitles is a term used for always on subtitles, without the ability to turn them off.
