Sub2DivX --> DiVX stand alone dvd player

I have a video file that is 16:9 with external .srt subs. Should I make one sub for widescreen display and a second one for letterbox display? Or will the subs automatically adjust itself when viewing the 16:9 video on a 4:3 tv?
