retiming .smi subs for use w/ ghetto imported dvd's

Hi Everyone,

I bought some imported Asian DVD's, and the English subtitles are TERRIBLE. Luckily, I was able to find some good subs somewhere else, but there are 2 problems:

1) they are in .smi format, so they only seem to work with RealPlayer

2) the downloaded subtitles are about 4 seconds too fast. It really ruins the plot for me :)

How can I re-time and convert the .smi subtitles so that I can watch them with my DVD? I'd like to avoid lengthy re-encoding of video (ex: for hard-subs or something). Which programs can I use? I have InterVideo DVD, BS Player, and VLC; I'd prefer sticking with those programs if possible.

Hi,

this should work:

1. demux the main movie using PgcDemux.
2. convert the .smi to .srt using Subtitle Workshop.
3. resync the srt using Subtitle Workshop.
4. use your .srt file to generate a DVD compatible subtitle using TXT2Sup or Subtitle Creator.
5. remux the main movie files + your newly generated subtitle using Muxman.
6. rebuild the DVD using VobBlanker.

I had a similar problem, where the subtitles that I ripped from the Region 4 Paprika DVD are seriously out of time (by 2 minutes!).

Converting to the srt format and using the Subtitle Workshop to set the starting time of the first dialog and ending time of the last dialog spoken solved this problem.

Once again, thank you! I was sitting with this problem for an hour thinking it was caused by by ripping process in DVD Decrypter. But I was wrong, seems the problem is on how this DVD was made and processed, since you do not (obviously) not see it when you playback the DVD.
