cant see subtitles

I d/l russian film (9company)
and the subitle file (same name as movie)
is in the folder but convertx wont recognize the file (sub.idx)
DVD Santa recognizes it but it doesnt show up when I burn.
Tried Subtitle workshop which shows the original subtitlles
and I went over top of them with the new subtitles
The subs wont show up on a standalone DVD player
or in computer (Power DVD)
what the hell am I doing wrong???TIA
