Ok, I had a DVD and never checked if it had proper subtitling and ripped it to x264 before I even checked. I couldn't get vobsub + MeGUI to properly add subtitles no matter what I did, so I played the original DVD on WinDVD. No subs, even though the menu said it had subs.

So I popped in a DVD I *know* has subs (they display properly on my component DVD player), opened it in WinDVD... no subtitles.

Thought this a bit odd, so I downloaded a short DivX file with included .idx and .sub files, which are known to work. Tried to play it in MPC and VLC... no subtitles.

What could be going on? This is just about the strangest thing I've ever seen. Thanks for any help.

Sorry if this is posted on the wrong forum, this one seemed most appropriate.

edit: subs work fine when playing dvds in WMP10, which makes this even stranger.

Open the vobs in DVDSubEdit to check if there are subtitles in the DVD.
For playing avis with idx/sub files you need to have VobSub installed first and Direct VobSub will pop up(a green arrow will show at the right bottom) when you play an avi with an idx/sub with the same name.
