Modifying Existing Subtitles

Hi Everybody,

This is my first post here. I have followed the site for many years and used it on lots of occasions to help with my ripping projects. I've always be able to figure out the basic things that I've needed to do...BUT...this subtitle thing has got me.

Can you please help.

I have a movie where the subtitles do not display automatically and when you turn them on they display "ALL" dialogue (English and French, which is really annoying) when I only want the French to be subtitled.

I have ripped the Subtitle with "SubRip" and got a file with a ".srt" format. I opened this with Subtitle Workshop and the titles seem to be there as expected.

I do not know what to do now. It seems I can easily edit the titles (within Subtitle Workshop) as the movie cycles through them. The subtitles have the timestamp beside them at the correct place. Do I need other software before I attempt this?

I can open the ".srt" file with Notepad, but can I edit the file this way (just delete the English titles)??

Some questions that come to mind.

How do I rewrite the subtitle back to the (IFO???) if that's what I do?
How do I fix (syncronise) the subtitle timestamp to the movie?
How do I modify the IFO file so the subtitles automatically turn on when I start the DVD?

There is now a number of new files in the TS_VIDEO folder that have a ".srm" format (one ofr each VOB). What are these??

I'd really appreciate any help I can get...and I'm still rather a noob at all this

These srm files are created by Subrip during your stage of ripping the srt file, it can be deleted. I think the easiest way is to use Subtitle creator to put back your newly edited subtitles into the DVD.

This prog is supposed to be able to modify subtitles from within our VOBs - it claims it can do everything ;) Give it a try (I've got this one isntalled, but till now never have had any need to use it):

DVDSubedit can help you editing subtitles already inserted in a VOB. (You can suppress some words, change the sub positions, the colors, ...). Look at the sticky guides on top of this forum if you want to know how to use it.

However, if you want to add subtitles to an existing DVD, the easiest way is to use SubtitleCreator. After installing it, go to the Help -> Manual to get information about how to use it.

You can use SubtitleCreator to preview your subs, thus fixing the synchronization problems if any with one of its synchronization possibilities..

The GUI can be switched to French or Dutch if needed.

Thx for the help. I have the direction to follow to allow me hopefully the right outcome. I'll dig in these programmes and get back here if I can't figure things.
