How to preview separated audio and video streams in conjunction with subtitles?

Hi,

now and then I add extra subtitles to some movie dvds, subtitles that I get in text format and change to images.

First I demux the dvd and then, in order to see if the subtitles are synchronized, I have to mux the video and audio streams and check the sync with vobsub or subtitle workshop.
It would be good to spare that last step and be able to check the sync without having to mux. I'm wondering if there's a way to do thatt.

If there is subtitle present on the dvd then you can compare it with your new subtitle. Usually I will rip the idx+sub stream from the dvd and adjust the new subtitle using SubResync.

On some ocassion, if no subtitle is present. Then I will take the audio as reference. I will load the audio in some editing program like Cool Edit Pro or Gold wave.

Thanks for answering. One question: how can you see the subtitles going in order to compare them with the audio going in Cool edit? Or you just take as reference the time of the first lines that you hear it? But in that last case, the out of sync may come later.

I find the starting time of some referencing point in the movie, usually one near the start, one near the end. Then I have some random checking near the middle. I always check the subtitles near the start and end of chapters.

wouldn't it be easier to just rip the dvd to one big vob file (no splitting), renaming the extension to mpg and the same name as subs and then load it in any player that supports subtitles? :confused:

You are right. That would be easier if you only want to check the sync, but if you want to add subtitles to a dvd you need to demux it anyway.

There's no way to add subs if you don't demux video and audio first, and AFAIK there's no way to check the subs and audio sync properly if you don't have the video and audio muxed together.

I just wanted to know if I could spare some step of the process, saving time and HD room, but I think that to achieve that it would be needed a player that supports video, audio and subs demuxed.

But, if you rip it to mpg, can't you just open it in Subtitle Workshop, edit the subs and then reauthor the dvd?

No, because all the programs to author dvds need audio and video and subs separatedly. You can't put the mpg into an authoring program if you don't demux it first.

yeh, but to minimize the hassle. i'd much rather just rip to one vob, edit subs in SubtitleWorkshop and then let DVDLab demux it itself.
