I've been doing a lot of research into subtitles this week, and I though I'd share some info I've gathered. This is mostly regarding forced subs and setting streams for a DVD in Pgcedit. I've tested things using PowerDVD and my settop (Sony RDR-GX315 DVD recorder). So technically I can't say any of this is 100% for every settop player out there....take it as you will.
1. If there is only one subtitle stream present in the VOB and it contains forced subs, THEY WILL BE DISPLAYED. There is no way to turn them off, even if you select off in the settop menu.
2. If there is more than one subtitle stream in the VOB and one contains forced subs, they WILL BE DISPLAYED if either a) no subtitle selection has been made, or b) an alternate stream has been selected but not turned ON (ie (SetSTN) Set Sub-picture stream = 1, off).
The only way to have the forced subs NOT displayed is to set another empty stream (with no forced subs) and turn it ON (or select the empty stream from the settop menu).
**I have no idea what would happen if more than one stream had forced subs in the same place, and no streams were selected. I assume the player would choose the first stream with forced subs and display those. Anyone know for sure?
3. The most compatible way to set subtitle streams in an IFO is using the SetSTN command in a VTSM SubPicM menu.
My Sony settop player does not honor SetSTN commands in the Pre area of any VTST (title pre commands). It is legal to do it that way, and PowerDVD works fine. But for the highest compatibility, place the SetSTN command in the VTSM SubPic menu (probably the name of this menu is meaningless, but why confuse yourself?). You can create a dummy VTSM menu for this purpose if one does not exist, and navigate from the First-Play PGC, through the VTSM, and then into the VTST.
I mention this because 2COOL's guide for setting a default subtitle ON instructs you to place the SetSTN command in the pre area of the VTST. As I found out, this does not work on all settops.
That's all I can think of right now. I hope this saves someone out there some time, as I've gone through lots of testing and research this week to figure out a few simple rules.
