Use R2 .sup on a R1 DVD?

Hi

Is there any tool out there that can change the framerate on a sup-file?
I have a R2 movie and want to grab the subtitles and use them on a "better" R1 release.
It would be easier than to do OCR processing an change the framerate on a textbased subtitle.

A sup-file has got nothing to do with the frame rate as the timing information inside the file is expressed in fractions of a second (when to start displaying and when to stop).

PAL movies are played 4% faster than NTSC because they are played at 25fps. NTSC are played at at the proper speed by using 3:2 pulldown.

So basicly I need to strech the timecodes on the .sup file from PAL version, so the match the length of the NTSC version of the movie.

You think of going into "Manipulate sup" and the adjust every single subtitle by using the timecode of the other .sup-file?
I'm not sure that would work. The 2 subtitles are different languages and translations are not always exactly timed.
It would also be a very long process.


Or is there something that I have overseen?

Hi!It would be easier than to do OCR processing an change the framerate on a textbased subtitle.I don't know whether you're familiar with "DVD SubEdit". With its fully automated OCR function, The TOTAL time, including initially loading the subtitles, OCR conversion, and writing of .SRT file takes less than 5 minutes.

You can then use "Subtitle Workshop" to adjust the framerate of your .SRT file...

Hi!I don't know whether you're familiar with "DVD SubEdit".
I just looked at it a few minutes yesterday but did only manage to do OCR on a single subtitle.
I would like to avoid using OCR and try to keep the original bitmaps.

I know that I could:
1. Use SubRip and 'Save SubPictures as BMP'.
2. Change the timings in SubRip.
3. Create a 'Sonic Scenarist (*.sst)' textfile that point at the bitmaps.
4. These can be imported into DVDLab and create the movie set.
(I have a more detailed guide of this process I can post here if there is interest. I found it some time ago, but had forgotten about it.)

There's a fairly easy way, if you're OK with using the PAL sized subs in an NTSC DVD. Convert the SUP subs to IDX/SUB format. Open the IDX in the Sub File Cutter utility that comes included in VobSub. Change the framerate from 25.000->23.976fps. Convert back to SUP using SubToSup. Fast, fairly easy, and they remain as image files, with no OCR needed.

There's a thread in this forum about how to convert SUP to IDX/SUB, if you can't use VobSub Configure to extract them from the DVD:
