SubRip srt titles not playing

I recently started ripping subtitles with SubRip into .srt format. I tried a couple and they played both on my SAP and VLC without a problem. So I did a few more and found that I can't play any of them on either my SAP or VLC, and the only thing I can think of, is that at one point I opened up one of the files with windows Notepad which may have changed the file association. Is that possible? What else could I look at? Does saving in Unicode make a difference?

I may have saved one, but I made sure I saved as .srt same as i would if using Notepad as html editor and saved file as .htm or .html

Could it be that I also saved as Unicode instead of ANSI?

Yes....
Standalones don 't like Unicode...

Thanks. I've been experimenting a bit and it looks like VLC doen't wither, but Windows Media Player doesn't mind them.

Is it possible to open and save the subs that are in Unicode to ANSI?

Open in Notepad....
File-->save as...
...and choose ANSI for encoding...

Thanks. I'll try it with a few. btw...Windows Media Player didn't like Unicode either. The file was in ANSI. Some of them are ANSI and others are in Unicdoe. I didn't realize that I should have said no to the Prompt in SubRip ...live and learn.

OK. I was able to get Windows Media Player (using DirectVobSub plug-in) to play a movie with the .srt file. I did make some mistakes when I did a few, by checking off the first VOB in some of the titles that was intentionaly skipped by SubRip ...it knew better than I ...so I will not check the VOBs that it doesn't at this point. Doing so through the synch out by 21 minutes in most cases ...no wonder I wasn't seeing the subs. But now I can see them, but with a 5 sec delay, so is there anyway to re-synch them some how?

is there anyway to re-synch them some how?I believe you'll find that "SubResync.exe" (One of the tools included in the "VOBSub" download package) will accept .SRT files for quick and simple re-synching...

BigDid - any idea where to find a guide on SubResynch?"BigDid" hasn't posted to this thread - and I'm the poster who suggested using "SubResync.exe" from the "VOBSub" package...

Just click on the first time in the lefthand list and change it to the correct time. When you then hit "Enter", you'll see that ALL of the times in the righthand ("Preview" column have been changed accordingly. Then just re-save the .SRT file as an .SRT file...

The following is the description of these instructions in the included "Subresync.txt" file in the "Docs" folder:

"- Adjust the time code to the right value in the first column for both - it's just like renaming in explorer - and notice how the second column changes at the same time. To cancel or reactivate your changes press the right mouse button."

setarip_old - Sorry about that, I'm loosing my mind and working on two issues at the same time (at least two usually.)

That seems to fix the problem. I wish I figure out what is causing the synch issue in the first place. There has to be a reason.
