Is there some tool that can convert sup files to the idx/sub combo?

The reason that I ask is that I'm trying to rip all the subs from a DVD which uses seamless branching, and neither vobsub nor vsrip can rip with the correct timings/order. PgcDemux can do it, but it only gives me sup files which I can't mux into Matroska. I can OCR into srt, but only for English, and I would prefer to keep all the languages.

Please advise.

Have you try extract a PGC VOB with pgcdemux, and then use vobsub ?

Well, SubRip's OCR has improved somewhat, and the UniCode support doesn't mean you'll need to go hunt for the characters yourself: they'll be right there for you to click on, at least for Latin-based languages. I've made a comprehensive list for each language I could find ;). If that's still too much for you, then I guess you'll have to live with it. After all, it's free software.

Ok. You could also try extracting the subs from your vobs with ProjectX. It should be able to deal with different cell timelines, colour models, and the newest version (0.90.04.00.b05 from 13.7. - you can get it from oozoon.de for example) is also able to export the subs directly in vobsub format (sub/idx).

Wow. Apart from being the most confusing program ever designed, it seems like project x has achieved what no other software could and ripped the subs properly! The palette is wrong, however, but I think that is fixable.

Personally speaking, I prefer to use DVD Decrypter to rip my DVD sources, so the prospect of placing an extracted "sup" stream into Emmel's sup2vobsub tool is very appealing.

Any chance a GUI could be developed for sup2vobsub?

*sigh* I guess I spoke too soon. Even ProjectX's ripped subs, though complete, are knocked out of sync by very noticeable amounts after the "seamless" branched sections finish. It's not worth resyncing them manually, so I think I'll just forget about ripping the subs. There is evidently no current software that can correctly rip a DVD with this type of structure. It's the MGM PAL Robocop DVD if anyone is interested, and I'm trying to rip the Director's cut.

I have tried it but I don't know what to do with just sub files and no idx. I suspect it will have the same errors as everything else, however, as even the DVD Decrypter ripped audio's delay changes a little way into the movie and it doesn't pick that up (leading to slight audio desync for the first 5-minutes of the movie).

This Director's Cut has just been an overall nightmare for me and ALL the common DVD ripping software.

If this is the case then I guess we need a better understanding of what the .IDX file/stream does and how to create them from scratch!

The idx is quite basic. It's a text file holding the palette, size of the video plus the time and byte offset of each subtitles in the sub file and several other information.

Yes, I had surmised as such, but the sub files are useless without the times and offsets usually specified in idx. Unless there is a way to generate one from the other...

Btw, I fixed the audio synchronization error by demuxing the audio streams with DGIndex in two parts; one upto the sync break, and one after the sync break. Then I joined them during muxing with the delay of the first file (-176ms) applied and then the opposite delay applied to the second file (176ms). This worked out perfectly.

When I extracted the .SUB stream using DVD Decrypter, it came in at 5,183KB. Which is 1518KB (1.48MB) smaller!

In short.... I would love to have a tool that could make use of DVD Decrypter's .SUB ripped streams.

Does anybody think this could become a possibility?

Hello SMD,

Did you watch the subs generated by recode2? And they were ok? It seems a bit strange, that there is such a big difference between the sub files, if they originate from the same source. The only difference I can imagine is in pes padding, coz the subpicture units should in any case be the same and of the same size.

But, have you tried px? I know you have your preferences in what comes to software, but the fact that px nowadays demuxes and exports sub/idx directly from the vobs is imho a really nice feature in this case.

The Recode2 VOBsubs work perfectly. Their timing is spot on from the beginning to the end of the movie.

And as a cross check, I tried using YAMB to mux DVD Decrypter's (5,183KB) .SUB with Recode2's (60KB) .IDX stream.... But the "mux failed" :(

You can't use directly raw sub from DVDDecrypter. Let them in the VOBs and use VSRip (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84442&release_id=162590) to create idx/sub from these files.

And although the above can now be muxed with YAMB. Sadly ShowTime2 Player and MediaPlayer Classic are not able to display the subtitles..... All I see is this lot: -

Works here perfetly with MPC 6.4.8.9, vsrip and MP4Box - GPAC version 0.4.1-DEV

Does your MPC refuse to show the subs only if they are muxed in mp4? In that case it could be a problem with MP4Box. Or does it also resfuse to show the subs, if you load the idx as an external file (with mp4 containing only audio and video)? In that case, it may be a problem with vsrip.

And how about VLC? If both MPC and VLC are allergic to the subs, then I guess the outcome of vsrip may be somehow corrupted... you seam to have in your idx an empty undetermined language entry in the beginning of the file... Maybe removing that dummy entry helps (and perhaps re-indexing the rest starting from zero) ?

If I edit the .IDX file and delete all the references to the "Vob/Cell ID's" I too am able to correctly display the subtitles now :D

Plus, the subtitles are still visible when I press "pause" and navigate thru' the file using the "slide bar".... Cool

Well, Normally you don't have to remove these lines. It depends of your IFO Structure and how do you manage extraction...

I see...Your DVD is multiangle and you have selected "Everything" in VSRip settings. That's why you have this issue. Try to select only one Angle in VSRip and try again. Otherwise, you should be able to choose also only one Angle within DVDDecrypter but in "File Mode" instead "ISO Mode"...

Using my Snatch DVD to test VSRip was probably not the best first choice I could have made ;)

That said.... At least I now know what to look out for and what lines of text can be removed/tweaked without causing damage to the .IDX file :)
