Subtitle Timecode Adjustment & Format Conversion

I'm sure there's many ways to do what I want to do, but just looking for suggestions on methods that you all use.

I ripped the .ifo / .vob for the subs I have on a PAL dvd. I did a 25 > 29.97 pulldown on the video because I am in NTSC land and I didn't want to re-encode the movie.

So, how can I get the subs from the .ifo / .vob into a format that MuxMan supports (.sst, .sup) and have the timecodes adjusted for 29.97?

I have the current beta of SubRip installed.

Guess there are several programs for extracting .sup from .ifo/.vob. For example ProjectX is capable of doing that.

In the .sup there is a normal 64 bit presentation time stamp according to which the subs are shown... dunno if any fps-related conversion is needed actually.

.sup timecodes should sync up very close, but you have a problem with the resolution.

I didn't want to re-encode the movie.

You have to re-encode the video because the resolution is NTSC not PAL. The advantage is that you do not need to re-encode the audio.

One option is:
-vsrip for vob->sub/idx
-vsconv for sub/idx->sst (may need to change NON_DROP to DROP in sst)
-resize bmps using Imagemagick (say)
-Adjust frame numbers in timecodes if so desired (subs will be early by up to a couple of hundred ms otherwise).

It's also possible to adjust the sup positions if you don't mind bad AR, just make sure that any unusually positioned subpictures (e.g. up the top of screen) are adjusted also.

I didn't want to start a new thread because my next question is still about changing the timecodes.

Is it possible to convert a sub file that is for a 23.976fps movie to 25fps?

I opened up SubRip and noticed a button that does "Allow Timing / Speed Modifications" is that the way to do this?

I'm surprised there isn't a tool that can just choose a new output framerate and it'll auto do the conversion.

Subtitle workshop lets you do this - in has Input FPS and an Output FPS settings - so you can select 23.976 for input, 25 fps for output, and voila! All the timecodes are adjusted.

With that said, I don't know if Subtitle workshop can handle the subtitle format you are using - give it a try anyways!

EDIT: I read somewhere that Subtitle Workshop can't read graphical subs. Damn.
