latest subrip 1.50 Beta 3a has experimental 3GPP/MPEG-4 Timed Text (*.ttxt) support (http://gpac.sourceforge.net/auth_text.php), without color support though.
you can feed this .ttxt to mp4box and create a mpeg-4 timed text subtitle stream in .mp4. you can obviously also modify the .ttxt as you wish and use more advanced options, like scrolling, karaoke...)
