Keep getting wrong subtitle colors

Newbie so you are warned...

About a quarter of my DVD's play with normal white subtitles on my PC and DVD player but show non-white (blue, red, green etc.) subtitles on my mediaplayer. These subtitles are very difficult to read. The rest of the DVD's have white subtitles on the mediaplayer as well.

I think there is a bug in the mediaplayer that ignores the subtitle color settings in some way. I understand that the subtitles are stored as bitmaps in the VOB files so I thought that the strange colors where in the subtitle bitmaps itself (is that possible?).

So I converted the subtitles from sup --> srt and back just to make sure I started with a clean set of subtitle bitmaps. I gave the subtitles the usual white/black outline. After that I created a new DVD with the orginal video/audio and the newly created subtitles sup file.

To my surprise this didn't work. The subtitles on the mediaplayer still show in all colors except the one I need (=white). In this case the orginal had blue/red subtitle and the new dvd has blue/red subtitles as well!

Any idea how this can be fixed? Where is the subtitle color stored? Streaming on the mediaplayer with or without IFO files doesn't make a difference. I always get the non-white subtitles. This information must be stored in the VOB file itself (and not in the subtitle sup file). But where?

Hmmm, to look further into what could be wrong, you could load your DVD in DVDSubEdit and check your subtitles. Take a look at the colour mapping for the subtitles that look fine compared with the subtitles with wrong colours...

Well, no, the color information is stored in the ifo file in a thing called the CLUT in the PGC you are watching. Without the ifo a default set of colors gets used.
DVDSubEdit and PgcEdit can both show you the CLUT.

It looks like the mediaplayer is completely ignoring the IFO files so the only option I have is changing the subtitle colors in the VOB file itself. If it is not possible to do this then I think I am out of options...

Then I opened the VOB file in DVDSubEdit. I cannot choose the Ignore CLUT option (or Shift-Click to modify the CLUT...) And if I change the colors for b, p, e1 or e2 and choose "Apply last modifications to all" I notice the "Apply changes to color" remains unchecked. So it looks like I am not able to make any changes to the (no IFO, so default?) color information in the VOB files? Is this correct.

Yes, I already did have a look at this guide earlier. And what I understood was that you could change the subtitle color in the VOB file itself? Is this correct?No. The subpics are stored inside the VOB files. Each subpic can use 4 colours from a 16 colour palette, the Colour LookUp Table (CLUT), which is stored inside the IFO files.

Read the section "Some background information on DVD subtitle colours" in the guide for more info on this...

That's why you can't use the colour settings when you have the separare VOB files only. Leave the files in the complete DVD folder and open the files from there.

Okay, I think I understand.

The mediaplayer software is broken at this point. So even when I play the DVD files from the original folder which contains the IFO files etc. the mediaplayer still show the wrong subtitle colors. So I think there is no workaround. The mediaplayer needs a new firmware...
