Making my OWN subtitles from scratch

Hey there,

I need some help. I have some VOB's of a Japanese comedy DVD, "Gaki no tsukaiya arahende", by Downtown. Anyway, it's in Japanese only. I want to make English subtitles for it (I can translate). How would I do this? I've had a look around the internet for information, although all I seem to find is info on how to edit subtitles, or remove them, etc etc. I want to make my own from scratch.

Also, I have two separate VOB's here, what is the best process to encode them together into one file? (one after the other). What program should I use, and do I need to add my subtitles during the encode, or later?

try DGindex to demux the video - you can have it load both vobs one after the other, and save out audio and video in separate streams.

then you can use any decent authoring program to add the subs.

probably a better option is to use subtitle workshop and avisynth to load your video/audio into it.

getting subtitle sync is pretty hellish though. i warn you :) the guy who comes in here sometimes to translate and subtitle can take up to 2 days for a half-hour program using DVDmaestro. though if you watch it once to get a script and do the syncing later you might save a little time. also using a better program would help. subtitle workshop is probably your best bet.

i found substation alpha but the download link doesnt work...and thats pretty much the only thing i found thats specifically for making the subtitles

Haha, cheers for that Mug Funky. There isn't much dialog in this, thankfully, so it shouldn't be too bad hopefully. I'll try out those progs and get back :)

Argh, I can't get this to work. I loaded the two vobs in DGIndexer, and they played, but without any sound. I demuxed them, but I don't think it did it properly as it finished immediately, and there is nothing I can then open in Subtitle Workshop. Am I making sense?

p.s- the two vobs I have here, I trimmed them up with Chopper XP beforehand. Is that a problem?

Try AegiSub. Made by fansubbers for fansubbers. ... or maybe sabbu.

Ok, so I downloaded AegiSub. It looks great, but I don't have anything to load into it. Like I said, I tried demuxing the two vobs with DGIndex, and it didn't work properly. Also, I have no idea how to use AVISynth or if I really need to?

But basically, it didn't demux properly. Could this be because the two vobs aren't in their entirety? (I stripped the start/end off them)

Whoops, sorry. I've just figured it out. I managed to get it to demux this time, although when I try to load the .d2v file in AegisSub I get an 'exception error'; so it looks like I'll have to just load the VOBs in AegiSub or Subtitle workshop.

I managed to load the VOBs in both these programs, although like I said, my problem is that I have two separate vobs, so once I finish adding subtitles to them, how do I put them both together into an avi or something?
