Is there any way to convert a sup subtitle back to srt?

First use DVDSupDecode to convert .SUP to .sub+bitmaps. Then Use SubRip OCR engine.

Yep, since a SUP file contains bitmap images of the subtitles (i.e. pure graphics, no text!), you'll have to go through OCR with SubRip.

However, I thought the latest versions of SubRip were able to read SUP files directly?

No. Latest version's can read DVDSupDecode scripts not SUP binaries.

DVDSupDecode is a command-line utility (runs from DOS box) from the pack 'DVD subtitles tools' by Frantisek Kasparek. ( http://web.quick.cz/FKasparek/ )

SubRip is a Win32 utility ( http://zuggy.wz.cz/ )
