Ive been trying to add a subtitle file to my xvid avi files using AVI-Mux Gui, but when i try to play them back, it doesnt show as having any subs.

what format do the subs need to be in in order for them to work properly with the avi? i want to play the resulting xvid on a dvd player that plays xvid. i can already play avi files with two audio tracks, but i havent been able to display the subtitles after muxing with the avi in AVI-Mux.

the source is an mkv file i demuxed into its two audio streams, video stream, and sub file. i can mux the two audio streams tot he video and they play back just fine, but when i mux the sub file in, it does nothing on playback.

Ive tried the subs as .srt and .ssa. is there another format i should try? Thanks

anyone have any ideas on muxing the softsubs into the avi file so they can be played back with or without the subs?

If I understood you correctly, you want to achieve playback of muxed avi subs in a standalone. I don't know if there are any standalone players that will play muxed subs from an avi. You might find more experienced users and help in the Hardware players section.

See also http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=97775 which unfortunately is not too encouraging regarding your question.

hmm ok from that thread it seems I can only use them as external and cant mux them with the avi itself. how cna i use the subs externally with a standalone player? is there a way to setup the disc i burn so that the dvd player recognizes the external subs?
