Hi,

First I am having a problem: I can't seem to get the subtitles for a DVD to display when watching the DVD on my computer. They work fine when watching them on a DVD hooked up to a TV, but not on the computer. I have tried two different computers, 3 different player applications & several different movies. Does anyone know what's wrong?

Second: Is there any way to rip the subtitles from a DVD into a text file of some sort?

Thanks!

Actually - I've done some debugging - it seems that movies copied with dvd shrink do not display subtitles on the computer, but they do play them on a DVD player hooked up to a TV. Does anyone know why this may be?

Hi!

Do the software players you're using provide the ability to select turning subtitles on and/or off?

If your burned DVD is a FULL copy, select subtitles from the DVD's onscreen menu...

I did try turning the titles on both in the player's options (winmedia player & DVD media player) as well as on the option menu on the playing DVD. The applications know that the subtitles are there: they list English & Russian, the two languages which are provided.
It was a full rip using DVD Shrink. The only thing I may have removed would have been audio languages (such as French). But the subtitles were all ripped. And the titles play fine when hooked up to a TV.

Try using VLC as your player...

It's a free software player (Previously named VideoLan player)

I just tried it & didn't egt anywhere.
I wanted to be able to ise Media Player Classic because it has a capture screen function (and I wanted to capture the pic with the text).

because it has a capture screen function
As do MANY players, including VLC (From the "Video" dropdown menu, click on "Snapshot"...)

If you play your ORIGINAL, purchased, commercial DVD on your computer, will IT display subtitles?

I don't have the original of that particular dvd, but I tried some experiments with various others & the problem seems to be with only copied DVDs. I use DVD Shrink.
