1st of all, I got the specification so difficultly....
Google doesn't give me "promise" link for the "ASS specification" key word.
Maybe :stupid: .(WHY IT'S NOT AVAILABLE ON GABEST'S SITE?)

I search for "ass" in Doom9 instead and know it's only available within VobSub-2.23-All.exe installation pack.

Well, now I've got the ass-spec.doc......

But when I read the specs and compare it with some scripts found there's some differences.

The definition of the "Dialogue" line format is different from so many scripts I refer to, I mean Field 5. It's named "Name" in the specs, but "Actor" in scripts.

So I assume if there's any upgrades of the ass specs.(though this field is informative only)

last but not least, I hope Gabest should put the latest specs on the site.

I googled "ass" and "actor" and only got results for Tom Arnold...

looks like "ass specs" is the only way to find it on google... but not really useful anyway....(I'd go asking experienced fansubbers)

All of my sub files are using "Name" for Field5 , which means my tools and pepole who make subs I DL'd are following the doc. But I think I saw one some time ago. Try resaving your subs to plain ssa with subresynch , and see if it is able to read/convert it.
The format line allows new fields to be added to the script format in future, and yet allow old versions of the software to read the fields it recognizes - even if the field order is changed.I assume you mean a big difference in the field order from file to file, which is OK . If it doesn't recognize "Actor" field it will just ignore it. anyway, I think it wouldn't really matter if playback is fine.

btw, Most subtitle workers I know of suggest having a copy of VobSub 2.23 around for the doc & tools.( untick "VobSub for DirectShow" during install, or there will be problems...)
