BBspot has run a story about Sony's new DRM technology for digital cameras. (http://www.bbspot.com/News/2005/11/sony_photo_sharing.html) ;) :D

"Hackers have already cracked the Sony DRM system by buying another digital camera and using it to take pictures of their pictures once they are displayed on their computer screen. "It's a hassle," said one hacker who wished to remain anonymous, "but at least you haven't wasted the money you spent on the Sony camera."

From the same link:
"People are sharing pictures all over the Internet without regard to copyright and trademarks. Just the other day I saw a Halloween photo of a kid dressed up like Yoda. Don't they know that Yoda's image is wholly owned by Lucasarts? That behavior needs to be stopped," said Sony Vice president of Copyright Protection Clay Wilkerson.
(...)
The system which also makes it difficult to print out pictures has prompted complaints from consumers. "I tried to send a picture of my daughter to her Uncle Tim, but this window popped up saying it was blocked. I decided to print it out and mail it to him. There was a 14-page license agreement that printed out first that I had to fill out and fax to Sony so they could send me an authorization code to print out the picture."

Wilkerson doesn't think the lack of photo sharing capabilities will hurt the sales of their digital cameras. "We've hidden the protection so the consumers won't notice it when they buy it, and our draconian return policy will prevent any returns. Problem solved."

Amazing, what a bunch of criminals ...

uhh, it's not April 1st already, is it? But the Camera thing can't be real. It may be a good reflection on the current state of copyright madness but that's it.

BBspot is a humor site guys!

These guys always make fun of all things tech. I guess the smilies weren't enough hints.

How come I don't see any Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake or any other similar no-talent-good-looks-only "artist" on that list?

Seriously who'd copy such music anyways?

Seriously who'd copy such music anyways?I wouldn't, and no one in his right mind would. I just want to know why Sony BMG (BGM?) hasn't released any CD with the more popular artists of today. It seems like a scheme or something, to first try XCP out with less popular artists, and then bundle XCP with the no-talent "artists."

I think if you want to effectively boycott sony as a consumer, you are going to have to let them know every time you return from the store and select a competitor's prodect rather than theirs. Ironically, that would also show them that they have almost gained the power of a "technology government" that you feel you need to talk to them personally. Either way, Sony is so huge, it would be pretty hard to hurt them.

Does anybody have a list of Sony's affiliated companies?

I think if you want to effectively boycott sony as a consumer, you are going to have to let them know every time you return from the store and select a competitor's prodect rather than theirs.Since I'm feeling evil :sly: here's some geurilla tactics:
Another good technique is quite simple: Go into a store and look at products, the more expensive and upscale the store the better. Engage the sales-droid in some conversation. When it tries to show you a Sony product say, "No, I've heard Sony stuff has some weird DRM virus thing in it, I'm not going to take a chance with them." Look blank when the sales-droid tries to explain that a TV is different to a computer. Repeat that you've heard that Sony has a DRM thingy that's wrecked people's gear, and you aren't going to chance it. Frown and leave.

Why do this? Most major corporations listen to their sales-force more than they do their customers, so get the sales-force scared about this too.

HAHAHA thank you for providing me with a good laugh.

unless you have tens or hundreds of thousands of people doing that it simply is a joke. sony take things like bad worldwide press and litigation far more seriously than a small percentage of people doing these "geurilla tactics". :D

Well I won't be buying any CD's from any of Sony's (Epic, Columbia, BNG etc) artists for a long while.... And I suspect if we all did the same, Sony "would" take notice!

If people did the same with their A/V gear and DVD's.... they would really take notice ;)

This is the best excuse I need, not to invest in a Blu-ray player.... LOL

if "we" all did it that would be a tiny drop in the bucket so no they actually wouldnt. for these things to have any effect it needs to be big numbers. for that you need to get the common buyer to do it aswell. thats where the bad press comes in because that CAN cause a big hit on their sales.

how about EMI ? in the other sony thread i linked to a statement by them saying how they wont use rootkit tech but are trialling 3 other types of DRM. ALL cds with ANY type of DRM need to be treated the same so they dont think that any type is acceptable. if you really wanted to show them its the DRM you disapprove of aswell then those are the cds you would boycot and not just everything sony, or any other company. to simply boycot every cd would just give them another excuse to yell "piracy is hurting sales" instead of the truth.

Well, I just bought a Panasonic DVD player after my old faithful APEX died.

BTW, I am on a personal Sony products boycott and therefore, did not consider a Sony DVD player.

To all Sony products http://users.telenet.be/eforum/emoticons4u/mad/1106.gif
