How to ad subtitle to DIVX?

hi,

I need ur help,

I tried to ad subtitle to div x movie, tried dvd lab, dvd maestro, they dont accept divx avi file!

tried muxman too, it is not working.

is there a way to ad sub without encoding the movie to svcd,dvd...?

I try to compress to DIVX the movie i own for my travels with my laptop, as english is not my first language, I would like to ad the subtitle.

DVDlab and other soft are for DVD movies (.vob) and not DivX/XviD.

Two ways to add subs to DivX/XviD:

1.) Without encoding again the AVI: Install VobSub (item to select: Directshow). Then you place the AVI and subs in the same folder with the same name both files. For example: movie.avi and movie.srt Now you'll be able to watch the subs with ANY player you use.

2.) Inlaying subs over the video (hardcoded subs). You have to create a new .AVI file with VirtualDubMOD and the "TextSub 2.23" filter (you have to install VobSub >> "Textsub for VDub")

Now that you know what you want, you can look at the doom9's guides.

I dont think use hardcoded subs is a good choose for play mp4 on your laptop.

convert .AVI to OGM(MKV) and mux .srt subtitles with VirtualDubMod.when you play the OGM(MKV),directVobsub auto load subs that mux in your video file and can be enable or disable.
For convert subtitle,I suggest Subrip or subtitleworkshop.Subrip work correct with unicode text subs so it may help when your text subtitles encoding as unicode.

Because on a PC,we can play almost mpeg4 format with switchable subtitles and turn off those subs is quite possible when we dont need see them.

Hardcode subtitles,naturally,are good compatible with any player but we cannot disable them and that my reason.

that s right, for a non english person,I need to have the english sub on my english movies.
I understand that if i want a div x movie to play on any dvd standalone player(with div x format), I have to insert the subtitle permanently.

Actually, there are inexpensive players that DON'T require permanently burned subtitles for DivX playback - The Philips DVP642, for example, sells for approximately $50US...

I played with avi recomp, and divxtodvd...(I am a newbe)

2 problems, avirecomp give me again an avi file...
and divxtodvd has a problem , jerky movie...

I have tried to ad a sub (srt) in the same file of my divx, I can see the subtitle when playing the movie, but the subtitle is too small, and I would like it yellow, and not white.

How I can change that.???
My goal is to make a DIVx movie and burn it on a cheap CD-r 750mega with subtitle or placed 5-6 movies on a DVD.is that possible? to have 6 movies, 6 sub and the dvd player detecte what sub and movie go together?

Are you talking about playing the video on your computer or on a standalone player connected to your TV? Many standalones can handle subtitles, but there can be problems, hard to give any further advice without knowing what make and model you're using.

If the problems happens when you're playing the file on your computer with VobSub installed, go to VobSub in your Start Menu and click on directVobSub configure, then click on the font name in the Main tab (should default to Arial). That will let you change font properties.

i try to avoid to connect my laptop on my beamer and use a standalone player with the beamer ,... before to buy a new dvd player which will support div x and x vid , i would like do some test.

how stanadlone player handle subtitle, do they have a parameter page(or function page...) to size the subtitle?

something is controlling the size and color of my subtitle(on my PC), Is it vobsub???

any idea about a good dvd player(standalanoe) which handle avi, div x, xvid,...and subtitle in srt format file???does the sub must be in subrip format...

There are a huge number available, and most will handle .srt subtitles as well.
I have a Yamada 6600 that will do subtitles fairly well, but it has problems (some of which can be fixed by installing cutom firmware). It doesn't let you change the subtitle size, but they're readable on a 28" TV.

thanks charlesky, I have heared the philips can handle everything, someone told me at best by or wal mart for 60$, as I am in europe, I will have to wait next months to be in the USA.
I did my first divx movie with sub today...this is new to me, all I knew before was DVD.this topic have been extremly helpful to me, thanks to everyone who has answered to my questions....

Many of the MTK chip based divx players (Yamada, DK Digital, H&B,...) play srt files fine you just need to have them in the same directory with the same name as the avi file.

as to muxing, I use AVI-Mux GUI which will allow you to add multiple audio/subtitle streams into an AVI.

I also have some trouble adding subtitles to a mp4 clip.

But i want to add two subtitles, in which i can select between on my standalone dvd/mp4 player. Adding one subtitle is easy; disc looks like this:

movie.avi
movie.srt

That works fine.

Now.. how do i add 2 or more subtitles?

One a supercheap player i bought some time ago (medion), i make the disc like this

movie.avi
movie.uk.srt
movie.se.srt

And that works ok, on my cheap player. I can select between the 2 subs fine.

But on my new player "Harman Kardon HS 500", i can only add 1 subtitle, since it has to have the exact name as the movie file. If i use the structure for 2 or more subs as described above, it cant find the subtitles.

I also tried to mux the 2 subtitles in a new .AVI, and that works ok on the PC, but both standalone players refuse to play the file.

Is there a different file/directory structure i should use? :confused:
