settings>preferences>input/codecs>other codecs>subtitles>subtitles text encoding> change to UTF-8 (or UTF-16) instead of system default when you play the MPEG-4 subtitles. This is done because MPEG-4 subtitles are only available in UTF-8 or UTF-16. It's really only needed if you're going to display subtitles in a language that uses non-latin letters, like say Swedish, German, Norwegian etc. English works fine with system default (unless you live in Japan or something).
