How to convert .idx/.sub to .srt?

I tried Subtitle Workshop (v2.51), but it says the sub-file is "a bad subtitle or an unsupported format", even if the subs play fine with i.e. Media Player Classic.

Any idea on how to fix? What program (for Win) does the job, and how do I convert? :)

Subtitle workshop can't use idx/sub so you need to use another tool to do the job. You could use SubRip or VobSub's SubResync. With both you'll need to do a bit of typing as you need to type in the characters for Character Recognition to work. You don't have to do this for the whole movie (Phew!) just teach it to recognize the characters.
