Muxman, SubtitleCreator and 2.35:1 movie

Hello,

I'm trying to do a simple DVD (without menus) with subtitles. I'd like to ask you for help regarding aspect ratio and position of the subtitles.

I created the subtitles in SubtitleCreator and authored the DVD in Muxman. Now I have 2 problems. The first one is, that the subtitles are only displayed over an active prat of the movie which is 2.35:1, not over black borders (70px bottom and top, 16:9 AR). Probably wrong setting in SubtitleCreator? Should I choose I'm doing a regular 16:9 movie?

I have no idea what are switches PS/LB for video and PS/LB/Wide for subtitles in Muxman. What should I choose? What do they mean?

And the last thing - I don't like the quality of the subtitles. They are not smooth (antialiased). I checked it in more players - ViPlay, VLC and MPC. The subtitles look perfect in preview in SubtitleCreator. Can I somehow view the pictures inside a SUP file to check what's wrong?

I usualy am using only LB for video, and LB and WIDE (=widescreen) for subtitles. If you have only WIDE for subtitles selected, then you can have it in the way you described. To have it on the black borders on 4:3 TV display you need to select LB and Wide for subtitles. Then when the movie is displayed on widescreen TV it will have also subtitles.

Abond> Well I knew what the shortcuts do mean, but I have no idea about impact of these switches on the final DVD. But I guess that they tell a DVD player what it should do if a 4:3 TV is connected. PS stretches the picture vertically and LB adds black borders. Am I right? So LB is probably what I want.
But now the subtitles. Should I produce 2 subtitle streams and select one for LB and the other one for WIDE? How should I produce these subtitles? What should I set up in SubtitleCreator, isn't somewhere a guide?

No, muxman will mark automaticaly the subtitle stream to be displayed as wide or letterbox - you don't need second subtitles. You select for the same subtitle LB and WIDE - even muxman give you a warning if you doesn't - it is displayed at the bottom part of the GUI. This I think has nothing to do with SubtitleCreator.

Abond> I think it must be a problem with SubtitleCreator, because I did what you said and the subtitles are not in black borders (at least on a PC). Not even in the black stripes included in the video stream. I don't have a standalone at home, so I can't check it there.

1. Capture a screenshot of the main movie in a program that doesn't change the aspect ratio. For example, use PgcEdit for this.

2. In SC, open your text subtitles. Specify whether movie is PAL or NTSC (Formatting -> Video format). Load the screen capture from step 1 as background picture in SC, and choose "1:1 (Corrected)" as picture scale. Change the vertical positioning value to place the subtitles where you want in the black area at the bottom. Change font settings and other settings, if you like, and create SUP file.

In your case, you only have to select "Wide" for subtitles in MuxMan. But you may click all three buttons (PS/LB/Wide) and thus avoid the warning in MuxMan, it doesn't affect the result for you.

Can I somehow view the pictures inside a SUP file to check what's wrong?Nothing's wrong, but yes, you can load a SUP file in SC and examine it. Try Tools -> Manipulate SUP

Well, really when I preview the authored DVD on PC the player(s) display always widescreen. That is it will display also the widescreen "version" of the subtitles (even if you check something like 4:3 compensation for example in Zoomplayer). Then obviously you must adjust the subtitle position with Subtitle creator. I don't remember the exact settings, but for my TV (!) I am using 50 for left 620 width and 460 height. With 470 already I have bottom part of the bottom line of the subtitles cutted due to the overscan in leterboxed version.
