Experiment: playing everything without VLC or MPC
Let us pretend for a moment that I wish to re-experience the year 2002, when nobody knew what VLC was and we were all still playing .mov files in Quicktime, .rm files in RealOne Player, and everything else in Windows Media Player 9. However, I also want such a setup to be able to play modern file types and codecs like MP4.
What would be required for such a setup?

I am not sure what you are asking.
Company/official players for each format in Win10? Something to allow the stock player in Win10 to play everything? Actually running an old OS and players but newer versions or addons to be able to play all the current formats?

No. Windows 10 did not exist in 2002. This is a Windows XP environment.

Never mind. The newest version of Windows XP Integral Edition dropped VLC in favor of something called the XP Codec Pack, which enables WMP to play FLV, MP4, etc. files. Meanwhile, Oldversion.com has the appropriate versions of Quicktime and RealOne Player. Experiment successful.

"XP Codec Pack" contains many of the same playback components that are used in MPC-HC to play videos. Namely DirectShow filters. Not sure you gained anything other then using Microsofts clunky player UI.

I just needed everything to be playable from WMP, Quicktime, and RealOne Player. If some components of MPC-HC are hanging around in the background, unnoticeable, then that's 100% within the parameters of what I'm trying to do.
