Hello,

For those interested, I have released the NHW v0.3.0-rc16 new version.

I continue to fine-tune the nhw_kernel weights. This new version has then more precision and a better visual quality.

More at: https://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/

Cheers,
Raphael

Hello,

Very sorry for disturbing/boring the forum that much, for those ultra interested/motivated, I have released the NHW v0.3.0-rc17 new version.

As usual, I continue to fine-tune the nhw_kernel weights. This new version has then more precision and a better visual quality (hope my eyes are not too tired, as I am very tired currently...).

More at: https://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/

Some people told me to not dream, NHW will never have an application in the niche industry... and NHW is useless actually. That's ok, I think I'll take a break...

Cheers,
Raphael

Thank you very much for your answer. It's reassuring to not bore the Doom9 community.

Very quickly, with the latest v0.3.0-rc17, I would find that NHW has reached an acceptable precision while keeping its efficient neatness, which would represent something interesting in image compression... even if experts say that precision is really more important than neatness... of course I can totally accept and respect this opinion.

Cheers,
Raphael

Hello,

For those interested, I have released the NHW v0.3.0-rc18 new version.

I continue to fine-tune the nhw_kernel weights. This new version seems then to have more precision, and so a better visual quality.

More at: https://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/

Also, some people seem to be testing at extreme compression, I just wanted to remind that NHW is only developed for -q9 to -q23 compression settings for now.

Raphael

Hello,

I made more visual tests of v0.3.0-rc19 and globally (on my test images) I would find that NHW precision is OK now, and maybe we can say that with this last version, NHW precision starts to be good? I am also happy that v0.3.0-rc19 rebalances neatness, as I maybe messed up with neatness with the previous version on some images!

Else I am more and more looking now at precision, and that's right that VVC VTM 12.3 precision is exceptional!... and I can understand people that say they clearly prefer VVC precision than NHW neatness... I'll try to improve NHW precision (while still keeping its neatness) but it is not easy, and I also think that fundamentally NHW can not reach the precision of MPEG VVC and its associated technology.

So again I think the main advantage of NHW is its speed, NHW is actually a lot and a lot faster to encode and decode than VVC.So I am searching for applications where speed would be a main criteria. Some people talked me about MJPEG applications. If you would see other applications do not hesitate to let me know.

Cheers,
Raphael

Hello,

For those interested, I have released the NHW v0.3.0-rc24 new version.

I continue to fine-tune the nhw_kernel weights. This new version has then more precision and a better visual quality.

I find that this new version has now a good precision. NHW is still developed for neatness, and I don't know how far in precision I will be able to push the NHW technology.

This new version has now a good precision while keeping NHW efficient neatness, and so I think I'll release soon the official v0.3.0 version.

Hi,
I keep wondering how small those improvements are and whether the quality is so bad that there is still so much improvement possible worth mentioning (every other day).

Wouldn't it be better to:
  • tackle the resolution restriction (even if it is a lot of work)
  • improve the webpage to better show what the encoder is capable of.
You keep mentioning that speed it the main feature, yet there are no statistics presented that showcase it.
If you do not think that doing a proper presentation is worth the effort, the project probably is not worth the effort.
If you do not think you have anything to show atm., then you should work on that.
than posting here basically the same stuff?

Hello,

I will just answer on quality, sorry. For quality since the beginning in 2007, I focused on neatness, because I found it visually pleasing and I also thought that the NHW technology could not compete in precision with the latest MPEG and AOM products.

Now it took me nearly 17/18 years to start to have a competitive precision while keeping NHW neatness. Now my focus in my very limited time is to enhance NHW precision, and I absolutely don't know how far NHW could go there?... -that's also why I make so frequent releases-...

Cheers,
Raphael
